[Guide] How to get Japanese eShop codes from amazon.co.jp (at least in the USA)
u/dragonbornritoMar 7, 2017, 10:03 AM
Hi all, I wanted to make a quick guide on my experience with the Japanese eShop. I managed to get eShop codes from
amazon.co.jp yesterday which I used to buy a few games successfully from the Japanese eShop (Voez, Snipperclips, Blaster Master Zero) and it worked, even if it was a bit slow. So here goes:
1. Get a Japanese account on your
Switch: There's tons of guides around to help you with this, so I'm just going to let you google it. Once you have access to the Japanese eShop, proceed to step 2.
2. Sign up for an
amazon.co.jp account: Your
amazon.com account does NOT carry over to
amazon.co.jp, so you'll need to set up a new account. You can use the same login information as your other account with no issue, however. If you're having trouble with reading since the page is entirely in Japanese, click the globe icon under the letters "JP" and select English. Once you have an account, move on to step 3. (Tip: I just put my first name in the first box on the account creation page and my last name in the "pronunciation" box below that. It may be wrong, but it works.)
3. Go to the Your Account page. Under Payment, select Add a Credit Card. On the new screen, enter your card info in step 1, but in step 2, click on the link that says International (outside of Japan). This will allow you to put a US card in. Once your card is added, move to step 4.
4. On the Your Account drop-down menu, click on Manage your Content and Devices. Click Settings on the next page, and then click Change under Country Settings. You'll need to provide a real Japanese address here. I used this post to help me:
LINK. Once you have an address successfully set up, go to step 5.
5. Search for Nintendo eshop codes in the search bar and select the amount in yen you want. Then click "Buy and get code" on the right side of the screen. You will likely be prompted to re-enter your card information on the next screen. Do so. You should then be on the "Review and Place Your Order" page. Ensure that the correct payment method and billing address for the card you are using are there. Then click the yellow button under the "Order Total" amount on the right. Proceed to step 6.
6. If everything goes right, you should be met with an "order processing" screen. You will likely be stuck on that screen for a minute or so. If you're lucky enough for it to go through without a hitch, move on to step 7. If not, you will be met with a screen saying that the processing will take additional time. This is likely due to our US cards doing business with Japan. In this case, simply wait a while and keep checking your email. After a couple of hours, my orders did finally go through, and I was charged the exact amount of USD as would equal the amount of yen I ordered (according to the Google currency converter). Once you receive an email from
amazon.co.jp, your code should be inside. Proceed to step 7. If a code is not present, you likely had your payment declined and I cannot help you from this point. Your mileage may vary here, but I've not heard of anyone being declined outright yet.
Edit: Lately the orders have been saying to verify payment method right after placing them. If you see this on your My Orders screen, just make sure it's using the right info and click verify. It may take a few tries. Once the words Pending verification and Verify payment are gone and you see the words Order Competed, you should have the email with the code.
7. Check your email and if you have a line with this text: "ダウンロード番号", your eShop code is the 16 digit code next to that. Go to your
Switch, load up the Japanese eShop, and click on the bottom selection on the left side. This is the code entry screen. Enter the 16-digit code from your email and press +. You should get a screen confirming the amount of the card you ordered. Click the top selection and the funds will be added to your account. Use your funds to purchase the games you want and enjoy!
Hopefully, some people get some use out of this post. You can actually get some games cheaper through the Japanese eShop (example: buying a 2000 yen card costs about $17.55, which will allow you to buy Snipperclips and still have 200 yen to spare). Plus, thanks to the region-free abilities, you can import games early, such as Disgaea 5 and Puyo Puyo Tetris (although not all games support English). Hopefully everyone enjoys their region-free Switches!
