"I think that the main theme is forgiveness: Abby wanted revenge; for 5 years, the only thing she wanted was to kill the man that murdered her father (a man who could potentially save millions of lives), but after that she feels shallow, still empty (having recurring nightmares of her dead father). Only when she focuses on saving two scars (her enemies), she is able to go on and find, if not happiness, peace. Ellie on the other hand is being consumed by hatred (mentally and physically), but when she realizes that killing Abby would only hurt Lev (an innocent, just like her in the first game), she let’s them go; unfortunately for her, Dina is now gone, and there is nothing else for her to do than walk away, trying to find if not happiness, peace."
"One more thing I like about the ending is It's foreshadowed earlier when Ellie is telling Dina about the time that Hunter was drowning Joel in that water and she shot him because Joel couldn't get to his gun. At the end Ellie was the Hunter and Abby was Joel trying to protect a kid."
"The ending was while Ellie was drowning Abby but stops because she see's a glimpse of Joel on the porch and then we see what was actually said on that porch between Joel and Ellie. Ellie talks about trying to learn to forgive and thats why i believe she stopped herself from killing Abby."
