Sega’s Toshihiro Nagoshi Discusses What If He Collaborated with Hideo Kojima
Death-Stranding-ds1-1340x1340.jpg

Iyane Agossah
September 25, 2019

Toshihiro Nagoshi shared Yakuza 7, Shin Sakura Taisen development stories and how he was not fascinated with games but with cooking as a kid.

September 2019’s SegaNama stream was broadcast on September 24. If you don’t know about SegaNama, they’re live streams featuring Sega’s Chief Creative Officer Toshihiro Nagoshi and coolest MC Ayana Tsubaki. They recap the latest info on the biggest upcoming Sega games, sometimes reveal new info, and Nagoshi shares comments on multiple subjects.

(vídeo na postagem anterior, na página 3)

This month’s stream, Nagoshi first chatted about how multiple Sega games won a Future Division award at TGS 2019: Persona 5 Royal, Yakuza 7, and Shin Sakura Taisen. He mentioned how he’s even more happy about Shin Sakura Taisen winning than Yakuza 7, as it shows Sega’s efforts with the revival are recognized.

Continuing on, Nagoshi most notably talked about what was happening with Sakura Taisen at Sega, pre-2016. As you should know if you’ve read our coverage, Shin Sakura Taisen‘s staff mentioned multiple times how concrete plans for the game started in 2016. That was when the franchise won 1st place in the popularity fan poll of Sega Fes 2016. Nagoshi mentioned that since it’s such a popular and iconic franchise, talks to revive it at Sega never really died down. Series Producer Terada also mentioned at TGS 2019. he constantly pitched new Sakura Taisen games over the years.

Nagoshi mentioned how they thought about many things pre 2016, and with no taboos, like whether to ask series creator Hiroi Oji to take part in a new game or not. They pondered a lot about who to hire for the story, etc. In the end, these talks always ended with the decision to keep the series dormant though. Until 2016.

In summary, Nagoshi also spoke about how they tried to not only make Shin Sakura Taisen for both fans and people who don’t know the series, they also developed the game with fans/veterans developers of the series and newcomers. That way they could decide what really characterizes the series together, and what is the best path for its revival. Commenting again on how he decided to make it an action game, Nagoshi mentioned that he believes there actually aren’t that many old fans who won’t play Shin Sakura Taisen simply because it’s not a tactical RPG anymore.

Next, Toshihiro Nagoshi gave a small development update on Yakuza 7. He mentioned how he assisted to all of the game’s recordings, as always, but this time he didn’t act as a sound director, besides giving a few directions. He mentioned how the last time he handled sound direction was when working on Judgment.

Next were a few more corners I won’t be writing about as it’s nothing relevant. One thing interesting though is Nagoshi mentioning he usually doesn’t find funny jokes or Manzai themed around games, and how it’s the same for a lot of developers. He said it’s like “serving ramen to a ramen shop owner”.

Lastly, we reached the final part of SegaNama, the “Ask Nagoshi anything” corner.

Since Dragon Quest had a huge influence on Yakuza 7‘s protagonist Ichiban when he was in grade school, someone asked what games marked Nagoshi in that period of his life. He answered he actually didn’t have any games back then, and his generation was the type to play outside. Moreover, rather than games, the thing that really fascinated him back then was cooking. How a slight change in ingredients and seasoning can lead to completely different results is obvious when said, but it fascinated him back then. He’d help with the cooking too and he remembers liking cooking over making plastic models.

Next is probably the reason why most people clicked on this article, not realizing I’d end up summarizing the whole stream first (like I always do). Death Stranding was also among the games who won a Future Division award at TGS 2019. Hideo Kojima once appeared as a guest on SegaNama too. Back then, Nagoshi and Kojima said it’d be nice if they did something together one day. As such, someone asked if this ends up happening, what kind of game would they make.

Nagoshi answered that thinking about it now, they kinda just said that without thinking about the consequences back then. He added that Kojima and himself would chat a lot about who does what on the project. Because they’re both the type of developers who want to be involved in every aspect of their games. As such, Nagoshi said that if they ever do something together, they’d just give up on making a game and do a completely different collaboration project. He jokingly said they would probably end up cooking and would start a cooking tv show with Kojima.

The last question was someone asking advice on how to broaden their tastes when it comes to games. They mentioned they don’t get why fighting games are popular, for example. Nagoshi answered in summary that it’s fine to just keep doing what you like, and become an otaku of that thing.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon launches on January 16 in Japan on PS4 and 2020 in the west.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon - Everything We Know About Sega's Newest Yakuza Game
By Michael Higham | @michaelphigham on September 20, 2019

A New Age For Yakuza
Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio are far from done with the Yakuza franchise. We may have closed the book on the series' long-time hero (and best boy, and dad) Kazuma Kiryu, but the Yakuza name and spirit will carry on with an all new saga in Yakuza: Like A Dragon, commonly referred to as Yakuza 7. There was a reveal event that took place last month that officially unveiled what the new entry entails, and the biggest surprise that came out of it was the new turn-based RPG combat system. After Tokyo Game Show 2019, we've now had an in-depth look at gameplay along with a beefy six-minute English localization announcement trailer (see above).

Over the past 13 years, Yakuza has established a signature blend of heartfelt melodrama and comedic absurdity that has won over plenty of hearts. And judging from the story and gameplay trailers we've seen thus far, Yakuza: Like A Dragon is trying to carry on that tradition. We now follow the story of Kasuga Ichiban, who's sort of an inverse Kiryu (I mean, look at his suit). But Ichiban will have his own unique tale through Japan's criminal underworld and we're here to break that down based on what we know so far.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon (its localized name) launches in Japan on January 16, 2020 and sometime later in 2020 for the West. Fun fact if you didn't know already: Ryu Ga Gotoku--the developer's namesake and the Japanese name for the Yakuza games--translates to "Like A Dragon."

3581174-kasuga.jpg

Kasuga Ichiban, Our New Protagonist

Yakuza: Like A Dragon will be a fresh start for the series as we step into the shoes of newcomer Kasuga Ichiban. That doesn't mean the new game is completely detached from previous lore; Ichiban was a member of the familiar Tojo Clan under the Arakawa Family. Thus, Ichiban's story begins in Kamurocho, the long-time home of the Yakuza franchise, but it seems that we won't be there for long.

A captain of the Arakawa family, referred to as Jo, murdered someone from a rival clan and the patriarch, Masumi Arakawa himself, needs someone to take the fall. As a young yakuza goon, Ichiban eagerly volunteers to do it, saying that he's been waiting to pay back a debt--Arakawa is Ichiban's foster father as well. This closely echoes where we first saw Kiryu in the opening for Yakuza 1.

3581176-noone.jpg

An 18 Year Sacrifice For Nothing

This means he has to spend a very long time in prison--18 years to be exact. Ichiban turns himself into the Kamurocho police, thus taking on the sentence and doing the time. However, something is amiss when he gets out. Expecting to be greeted by his fellow yakuza family members, Ichiban re-enters the free world all alone. As he walks out the prison door, he bows and exclaims his excitement to come back but no one was there except an old lady crossing the street who at least acknowledges him. It's strange because Ichiban mentions having received letters from the boss while locked up that would indicate the family would be there for him.

3581175-noooo.jpg

It's Not A Yakuza Game Without Betrayal

Curious about why none of his fellow yakuza were around, Ichiban embarks on finding the truth. He eventually finds Arakawa after all this time, now older with gray hair, but it's not the reunion he wanted or expected. Arakawa points a gun at Ichiban and says that he needs Ichiban to take a bullet for him and die. Ichiban was shot and betrayed by his mentor and father figure--this is par for the course in Yakuza's brand of drama and it's only the beginning for Ichiban's story.

3581150-kasugakun.jpg

Ichiban As A Person

When saying that he's essentially an inverse-Kiryu is a short-hand way of saying that he's much more eccentric--he almost reminds me of my personal series favorite, Goro Majima, though a lot less deranged. Ichiban seems to be a kid at heart with an ideal worldview despite being in the yakuza. In one early scene he watches fireworks with a glimmer in his eyes mentioning that the heroes will prevail at the end of the day, just like in his favorite game series Dragon Quest. Yes, Ichiban loves Dragon Quest. He also scarfs down five beef bowls before turning himself in, so the man can eat.

In his return from prison and search for the truth about what happened with his family in the Tojo Clan, he appears to be unconditionally loyal and earnest, which is a trait he seems to share with Kiryu. It'll be interesting to see how hitting rock bottom changes or doesn't change him.

3581152-yoko.jpg
Yokohama, Our New Home

After Ichiban gets apparently shot and left for dead, we see him awaken in a pile of trash. The first person to greet him mentions that he's nowhere near Kamurocho and instead stuck in Yokohama, Isezaki Ijincho to be exact. It's a port town that appears to be a lot less congested in the game than past locations. There's a section called Isezaki Road that looks to be a bustling city center with shops, restaurants, and nightlife. In series tradition, the game pulls a lot from the real-world location it's referencing.

Along with a fresh location never used in past games comes a whole roster of new activities and minigames to enjoy in the new city--more on that later (it gets wild).

3581170-edhoxmpueaa3gcq.jpg

Yakuza: Like A Dragon Quest

Not only is Ichiban a Dragon Quest fan himself, Yakuza 7 will, in some ways, literally play like Dragon Quest. In a drastic change in gameplay, RGG Studio is incorporating a turn-based RPG combat system. It was the most surprising aspect of the initial reveal considering the series has always been an action-brawler type of game. If we take things back to April this year, it turns out that the team's April fools joke was no joke at all.

Fights can stir up in series tradition by running into hostile goons on the street; the game will then switch over to an RPG battle system where you attack by giving party members commands when their turn comes up. You'll have HP, MP, elemental damage, and a number of attacks that can do different things such as AOE damage or knockback. It appears that you can navigate the arena during battle with some attacks accounting for position and environmental factors--hell, you see an enemy get knocked into traffic and getting run over.

3581169-squaddd.jpg

Ichiban Isn't Alone In His Fight

With this being a turn-based RPG, Ichiban surely needs a party to tag along with him in brawls on the streets. So far, we know that he'll have a former detective named Kouichi Adachi and a cabaret hostess named Saeko Mukouda by his side. You'll also have a local car mechanic and the man you first meet in Yokohama as allies.

3581184-cray.jpg

Heat Actions, Partner Attacks, And Summons

A signature of Yakuza combat were the vicious (but never lethal) heat actions, which were special, high-damage attacks that changed depending on the context in the environment. Yakuza 7 still features these, but of course in RPG format. We also got a peek at partner attacks where two party members sync up for flashy, tag-team strikes. What's even more wild is that you'll be able to call in summons. You can bring in summons to deal damage by paying for them on your phone (in-game that is), one of which is a superpowered crayfish that'll viciously claw at your enemy's face. It's utterly ridiculous and I'm here for it.

Look, I thought the absurdity reached its peak with Kiryu tossing people into rivers (or hiring a chicken to run his real estate business) or Yagami kickflipping dudes in the face, but Yakuza 7 will be in a league of its own.

3581148-jobz.jpg

There's A Job System

Ichiban can take on different fighting styles through the game's job system--you literally have to go to a Hello Work office to change jobs. There's the Bouncer job that has Ichiban sporting a snappy suit and a sword, and a Host job that includes an attack by popping champagne in an enemy's face. And if you want Ichiban in oversized streetwear, a bucket hat, and a whole lot of jewelry, you can take on the Dancer job which looks to use capoeira-style moves like Majima's Breaker stance in Yakuza 0.

Different stats like HP, MP, attack, defense, vitality and elemental resistance will change depending on your level and job. It seems that the RPG systems are going fairly deep.

3581179-zhao.jpg

The Chinese Mafia: The Yokohama Liumang

In Yakuza 7, it seems that Yokohama is home to a number of competing factions and interests, even groups of different nationalities--it's not entirely clear if they're enemies or allies either.

There will be a faction of the Chinese mafia called the Yokohama Liumang that's led by a character named Tianyou Zhao. We don't know much about him yet, but he seems to be a cheeky one, referring to Ichiban as "Kasuga-kun."

3581180-geomijul.jpg

The Korean Mafia: The Geomijul

A Korean organization called the Geomijul are also players in the dynamic of Yokohama's criminal underworld. They're led by Seong-Hui and she appears to be a shadowy operative--the group is described as "shapeless as a spider's web" which makes sense given "geomijul" can translate to "spider web" in English. Not much else is known about them.

3581182-seiryu.jpg

The Yokohama Yakuza: The Seiryu Clan

As for the yakuza presence in Yokohama, you'll be dealing with the Seiryu Clan. They're led by chairman Ryuhei Hoshino who says, "To us, reputation is everything." The Seiryu Clan seems to have full control of Ijincho, but are also said to be working in the shadows. There isn't much else we know about them yet.

3581149-racist.jpg

Right-Wing Nationalism In Japan

There are a few seconds in the story trailer that show a darker side of Japan's socio-political climate. It appears that a right-wing nationalist movement plays a role in the story--you see a political figure speaking to a large crowd, followed by protestors with signs with clear anti-immigrant messaging and t-shirts that say "Bleach Japan" which could be the racist movement's name. Considering that part of Yakuza 7's story involves Korean and Chinese people and organizations, hostile nationalism could be integral to the drama that unfolds.

3581183-eepx4uzu8aaidgb.jpg

See Some Old Friends Along The Way

On a much lighter note, you may notice some old friends from past Yakuza games in the story trailer. For one, the adorable orange-head mascot from the seaside town Onomichi in Yakuza 6: The Song Of Life is back! We see someone sporting the Onomichio costume, but your guess is as good as mine as to why. Even the grown men in diapers from the "Be My Baby" substory in Yakuza 2 make an appearance.

3581172-kartz.jpg

Yakuza Kart Is Real

In what looks to be the wildest new minigame coming to Yakuza 7, Dragon Kart doesn't just bring kart racing to the series, it's a full on Mario Kart-style thing with power-ups, drifting, and weapons. It's ridiculous to see in action and you really wouldn't want to have it any other way. It seems that there's nothing wrong with some street racing in Yokohama using little go-karts outfitted with rocket launchers and gatling guns. I'm just a little bummed we didn't get this earlier so we could call it Kiryu Kart.

3581185-karaoke.jpg

Karaoke Is Back

Karaoke is arguably the best minigame in all of the Yakuza series and it's back for this time around. Ichiban seems to be really enjoying himself in the short clip we see of the karaoke minigame, and I'm very excited to hear what new, catchy, and silly songs these characters can belt out. It's taking on the rhythm system established in Yakuza 6 and Yakuza Kiwami 2, and if karaoke is like previous games, these songs may give you insight into characters' true feelings about other aspects of their lives.

3581171-wutt.jpg
Minigames Galore

As with any game in the series, Yakuza 7 looks stocked with minigames. While Dragon Kart and karaoke standout, you'll be able to gamble with licensed PachiSlot machines from Sammy and Universal Entertainment, one of which is Fist of the North Star-themed. DartsLive and golfing make returns as well as hanging out at hostess clubs. You can also go to the movie theater and fight to keep Ichiban awake through a series of frantic button prompts. Another new one appears to have Ichiban riding a bike around to collect cans for money. And there's sure to be more revealed as we get additional information closer to the launch of Yakuza: Like A Dragon, aka Yakuza 7.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon details battle system
An in-depth overview of the game's "Live Command RPG" battles.
Sal Romano

Sega has shared new information and screenshots of Yakuza: Like a Dragon detailing the game’s battle system.
Get the details below.
■ Ichiban Kasuga in Battle
Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_09-26-19_001.jpg

Born in the soapland Shangri-La in Kamurocho, Ichiban Kasuga lived an isolated childhood, never knowing his parents. For Kasuga growing up, his only pleasure in life was playing Dragon Quest, which someone had brought to the office several years earlier.
Captivated by the Dragon Quest that kept him company and gave him his first taste of adventure, it became Kasuga’s dream to one day become a hero who fights alongside his friends for justice.
Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_09-26-19_002.jpg

Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_09-26-19_003.jpg

Ever since, Kasuga remembers Dragon Quest whenever he does anything. That habit remains in tact even now—in battles where his life is on the line, he still likens his opponent to a monster.

In Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Kasuga’s perspective is represented in unique ways such as the enemy’s appearance changing during battle, similar to a monster. In this way, you can battle against a variety of unique enemies within the series’ existing real world setting.

■ New Battle System: Live Command RPG Battle
“Live Command RPG Battle” is a new battle system that combines the series’ signature action with an RPG battle system that all players can enjoy. While it is an RPG battle system, time does not come to a halt for the city that is always in motion, and battles unfold dynamically and in real-time. At the same time, the situation in the city and the enemy’s positioning has a major effect on battle, meaning strategy has also significantly improved.

Master Commands in Which Various Action Unfolds
Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_09-26-19_004.jpg

In addition to basic actions such as “Attack,” “Defend,” and “Run Away,” original elements such as “Kiwami Skills” and “Delivery Help” can also be selected during battle. The Kiwami Skills command allows players to execute special moves, including powerful techniques similar to the series’ longstanding “Heat Actions,” and can also activate techniques with various effects including “Attack,” “Recovery,” and “Support.” Many Kiwami Skills require button mashing or button inputs, so you can enjoy the feeling of playing an action game even though it is an RPG.

Attack Any Enemy, But with Potential Hindrances
When attacking distant enemies, the enemy in front of you may block your attack. Or in a situation where an ally is nearby, they may unleash a followup attack on the enemy you attack. The positional relationship between enemies and allies, which change in real-time, will significantly affect your strategy in battle.
From ranged attacks to cooperative attacks and more, a large number of attacks will be available, and depending on your position against the enemy and the layout of the battle stage, your level of effectiveness will constantly change. Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a game with a deep layer of strategy that does not end at simply “choosing a skill.”

Use Objects in the City as Weapons
Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_09-26-19_005.jpg

As you might expect from a game in the Yakuza series, you will still be able to pick up and use objects in the city as weapons. If an item such as a sign or bicycle happens to appear within range, the action of picking it up to wield it, or kicking it at the enemy to attack them is automatically activated. Since the power of those attacks are massive, how you use the items you come across will influence how battles play out.

■ An Overview of Each Character’s Battle Style
In Yakuza: Like a Dragon, characters have jobs, and by changing jobs you can change their battle style. Here we will introduce the battle styles of the protagonist Kasuga, as well as his allies Adachi, Namba, and Saeko.

Kasuga: “Hero” – An All-Rounder Who Defeats Enemies with Swords (Bats, etc.) and Also Has Support Skills
Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_09-26-19_006.jpg

Kasuga wields a bat in battle. From his standard “Bunt Attack” to his wide-range “Mega Swing,” he can learn a variety of flexible Kiwami Skills to use accordingly in battle. He has Kiwami Skills to give orders to other party members, which increases their attack power or heals them, making his battle style one suited to the name “Hero.”

Adachi: “Detective” – A Strong “Warrior” with a Battle Style that Combines a Baton and Apprehension Techniques, and Has Skills Only a Veteran Detective Would Have
Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_09-26-19_007.jpg

Adachi fights with a powerful battle style, where he wields a baton in his left hand to beat down enemies, while using his right hand to grab-hook enemies. As a former detective, he makes use of various apprehension techniques. Striking a powerful blow from his baton, he can also withstand multiple enemy attacks or immobilize the enemy.

Namba: “Homeless” – A Natural “Mage” With Skills Acquired by Survival, Who Attacks Enemies by Manipulating Pigeons, Blowing a Scorching Mist, and Even Stinky Breath
Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_09-26-19_008.jpg

Namba wields weapons like umbrellas and canes in battle. While his normal attacks are not strong at all, he can overwhelm enemies by commanding pigeons to attack them, and use alcohol and a lighter to spray a scorching mist, somewhat like magic. He also has various skills seeming of a homeless person, such as “Begging” to persuade enemies to give him items.

Saeko: “Junior Mama” – A Tricky “Magic Warrior” Who Mows Down Enemies with her Handbag, and Utilizes Techniques that Lower Enemy Ability and Inflict Status Ailments
Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_09-26-19_009.jpg

Saeko fights wielding a handbag and props only a cabaret club junior mama would have. She has a variety of Kiwami Skills, including swinging her handbag like a hammer, blinding the enemy with makeup powder, and self-strengthening through yoga.

■ Delivery Help
Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_09-26-19_010.jpg

One of the key features of battles in Yakuza: Like a Dragon is “Delivery Help,” which is a “summoning service” that dispatches a character to help you fight, accessed by paying a fee via your smartphone during battle. The content of the summoning service differs depending on the character, ranging from “all range attacks with added effects” to “HP recovery” and so on.
Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_09-26-19_011.jpg

Since it costs a lot more to summon characters that offer stronger services, it is important to save up your money. You will be able to summon more and more characters as you clear the sub-stories that occur in the city and as you progress through the main story.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is due out for PlayStation 4 on January 16, 2020 in Japan, and in 2020 in the Americas and Europe. Read more about the game here and here.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon details Dancer, Fortuneteller, Riot Police Officer, and Idol jobs
Four of various RPG class-esque jobs.
Sal Romano

Sega has shared new information and screenshots of the Dancer, Fortuneteller, Riot Police Officer, and Idol jobs of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, the latter three of which were first introduced in Weekly Famitsu earlier this week.
Get the details below.
■ New Jobs Introduction
The following is an introduction to the jobs that protagonist Ichiban Kasuga and his allies can change to at Hello Work.

Dancer
A high-spirited job that unleashes rhythmic and cool attacks while dancing. The Dancer’s break dance-based spin attacks deal damage to surrounding enemies, meaning group battles are of no issue. Other than that, the Dancer possesses many tricky techniques, and it is said to showcase its skill through the skillful combination of these techniques.

Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_10-03-19_002.jpg

Fortuneteller

A job that fights with a crystal ball in hand. While the Fortuneteller does not appear suited for battle at first glance, it is very frightful job that can create various disastrous and miraculous effects such as thunder through its “fortunetelling,” as well as deal heavy damage and status ailments to enemies. The fortuneteller is a job that possesses a certain wickedness like a wizard, unlike Nanba’s original job, the Homeless job. Since its defense power is low, it is important to use techniques without getting close to the enemy.

Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_10-03-19_003.jpg

Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_10-03-19_004.jpg

Riot Police Officer

A job with a full-body armor and a large shield. As its appearance suggests, it boasts high defense power and toughness. With attack and defense techniques that make use of its shield, the Riot Police Officer would play the role of the “Heavy Warrior” or “Knight” in an RPG. Since this is a job that specializes in defense and is difficult to defeat in battle, it is recommended that characters with low physical and defense power be brought up as a Riot Police Officer.

Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_10-03-19_005.jpg

Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_10-03-19_006.jpg

Idol

A job that is exclusive to female characters, the Idol charms its enemies and heals its allies, and would play the role of a “Priestess” in an RPG. Its abilities are extremely balanced, and uses a microphone to fight with direct attacks, as well as many song-based attack and recovery techniques. The Idol is an all-purpose, easy to use job that can play the role of both an attacker and a healer.

■ Changing Jobs at Hello Work
In Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Ichiban Kasuga and his allies can change to various jobs at Hello Work. Since each job offers vastly different battle styles, techniques, and ability values, determining which job to choose and whether to develop that job is a key strategy. Try out a combination of various jobs while building your dream party.
—Hello Work Misaki at Isezaki Ijincho in Yokohama.
Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_10-03-19_009.jpg

Job Development
Each job has a “Job Rank,” which similar to character level increases as you gain experience through battle and the like. As your Job Rank rises, you can learn new techniques unique to that job, as well as increase your character’s base ability values. Some of the techniques you can learn are special skills that can be used by all jobs. Also, since your base ability values increased by your Job Rank carry over when switching to other jobs, experiencing and mastering various jobs is a shortcut to character enhancement.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is due out for PlayStation 4 on January 16, 2020 in Japan, and in 2020 in the Americas and Europe. Read more about the game here, here, and here.

Unleashes various techniques that come with mysterious effects via the crystal ball they hold in their hand. Force enemies into a swirl of agony with fire and electricity. Their defense is low, however. In a fantasy RPG, they would be the “mage” class.

Riot Police Officer

A job with high defense power thanks to its big shield and full-body protector. In a fantasy RPG, they would be the “knight” class.

Idol

A female-exclusive job that specializes in enchanting enemies and healing allies. With mic in hand, it uses physical attacks and song-based techniques, and has fairly decent attack and defense power. In a fantasy RPG, they would be the “dancer” class.
It should be noted that Yakuza: Like a Dragon has parameters called “Life Experience” (charm, enthusiasm, mentality, kindness, cheerfulness, etc.), and if you do not meet the required Life Experience for each job, you will not be able to switch to that job. Life Experience rises as you complete quests and enjoy Play Spots.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is due out for PlayStation 4 on January 16, 2020 in Japan, and in 2020 in the Americas and Europe. Read more about the game here, here, and here.

Sal Romano

Sega has shared new information and screenshots of Yakuza: Like a Dragon detailing the game’s “Life Experience” growth element, which was first introduced in Weekly Famitsu last week.
Get the details below.
■ Life Experience
“Life Experience” consists of six parameters that represent protagonist Ichiban Kasuga’s characteristics and human nature. Those parameters are “Enthusiasm,” “Mentality,” “Cheerfulness,” “Kindness,” “Intelligence,” and “Stylishness.”
There are various merits to building up Life Experience, such as getting a specific job through Hello Work, talking to people you would normally not bother to talk to, gaining the upper hand in battle, and becoming more popular with women. Build up all sorts of experience to strengthen Kasuga’s Life Experience.
Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_10-10-19_001.jpg

Your Life Experience parameters will develop based on your actions and choices. Here is an outline of each parameter in greater detail:
  • Enthusiasm – The source of “willingness” and “romance.” Develops through enthusiastic conduct and doing things with utmost effort.
  • Mentality – The source of “mental strength” and “concentration.” Develops through situations that test your courage and emotional strength.
  • Cheerfulness – The source of “sociability” and “brightness.” Develops through actions that lighten the mood.
  • Kindness – The source of “broad-mindedness” and “empathy.” Develops through kind interaction with people, animals, and nature.
  • Intelligence – The source of “education” and “memory.” Develops through logical suggestion and studying.
  • Stylishness – The source of “charm” and “character.” Develops through clever exchange and dignified behavior.
■ How to Increase Life Experience
Life Experience accumulates through various actions, including helping those in need and enjoying Play Spots. Life Experience also accumulates through choices made in events for sub-stories and the like. Assertively playing, learning, and interacting with the people you encounter is the shortcut to building up Life Experience.

■ An Example of How to Increase Life Experience
Ocean Qualification School: A Play Spot that Significantly Increases Kasuga’s Life Experience

“Ocean Qualification School” is a new Play Spot that you will be able to visit as you progress through the story, and by passing the various qualifying exams you can take there, Kasuga’s Life Experience will rapidly increase.
At the Qualification School, you can take exams with questions in a variety of genres, from “History,” where you can get a general education on Japanese and world history, to “Isezaki Ijincho Certification,” which is filled with questions for Isezaki Ijincho enthusiasts.
Exams are four-choice quizzes where you must answer the questions within the allotted time. Pass various tests to improve Kasuga’s human nature.

Enjoy the city’s various Play Spots and increase your Life Experience to enjoy the game with an upper hand.

—From the bond status screen, you can check your bonds with each character.
Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_10-18-19_001.jpg

■ How to Deepen Your Bonds
Spend Time Together at Play Spots

Some of the game’s Play Spots allow you to bring a friend along to deepen your bonds. For example, you can watch a movie with a friend at the new “Traditional Movie Theater” Play Spot, and if you choose their preferred movie, you can deepen your bonds in a sitting.
Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_10-18-19_002.jpg

Eat Together

Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_10-18-19_003.jpg

■ Bond Dramas: Side Stories that Occur by Deepening Bonds
As you deepen your bonds with each of your friends, side stories called “Bond Dramas” that reveal each person’s true nature will unfold one by one. By deepening your bonds, your friends will place their trust in you and open up to Kasuga in a variety of ways, including by revealing their secret pasts, worries, and troubles. By hearing out their stories and resolving their worries, your can develop their abilities in a major way.
Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon_2019_10-18-19_004.jpg

Bond Skills: Strong Cooperative Skills Learned by Deepening Your Bonds
By clearing Bond Dramas and deepening your bonds with friends, you can learn powerful cooperative attack skills called “Bond Skills.” A Bond Skill’s contents and effects differ for each character, but each one is a feat of its own and boasts the highest-class power in the game. Through the proper use of Bond Skills, you can crush the formidable foes and powerful bosses that stand in your way.
—In this Bond Skill, Adachi binds the enemy’s arms, then Kasuga follows up with a strong bat attack. It is a powerful, unavoidable blow.

Explore a map three times bigger than Kamurocho.
Sal Romano Dec 13, 2019 at 11:28

Sega has released new information and screenshots for Yakuza: Like a Dragon introducing company management and equipment forging.
Get the details below.
■ Three Times the Size of Kamurocho! The New Setting of Isezaki Ijincho, Yokohama
Isezaki Ijincho is about three times the size of Kamurocho. Each area has its own personality and charm, including the “Public Employment Security Office District,” “Snack District,” “Brothel District,” “Isezaki Road,” “Kounai Station,” “Chinese Restaurants Alley,” “Korea Town,” “Chinatown,” and “Hamakita Park.”
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Public Employment Security Office District
Hello Work Misaki is located in this area, which is where protagonist Ichiban Kasuga and company can go to change jobs. Additionally, the homeless’ living quarters and a street lined with small, suspicious-looking restaurants can also be found here. It is the area with the heaviest atmosphere in Isezaki Ijincho.
—The “district of poverty” is where the homeless congregate. This is where Kasuga wakes up after he was beaten by Masumi Arakawa. It is from here he starts his life in Isezaki Ijincho.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

—A desolate lineup of small restaurants. None of the shops actually operate as a small restaurant—they are actually secret brothels.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Korea Town
An area with the atmosphere of a foreign land, where most of signs are written in Hangul. This is also where the base of a mysterious organization called the Geomijul is located. It is a dangerous area.
—A dangerous place in Isezaki Ijincho, lined with Korean restaurants and the like.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Chinese Restaurants Alley
An area where the high-end Chinese restaurant Qing-Jin Restaurant is located, which is the stronghold of the Chinese mafia known as the “Yokohama Refugees.” Like Korea Town, this is one of the dangerous areas of Isezaki Ijincho. It has a very different layout from the Chinatown area, which is similarly lined with Chinese restaurants.
—A desolate lineup of small Chinese restaurants bring about an atmosphere that make this area difficult to tread.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Isezaki Road
Isezaki Road is a shopping district where Isezaki Ijincho is at its flashiest. Many shops line the streets of this area, where you can enjoy eating out and having fun.
—This is an area you will often visit to shop and eat out.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

—PIA is one of the tie-in pachislot shops in the game, where you can go to play popular pachislot machines. You can exchange the medals you obtain here for powerful items.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Brothel District
An area where brothels such as the long-standing “Otohime Land” line the streets. There are also shops that deal in adult items and nightlife. Classless hosts and the like also wander this neighborhood.
—The adult playground area of Isezaki Ijincho.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

—The Otohime Land brothel. There is currently only one manager, who is always swamped with work. Kasuga and company come upon this shop via a job offer from Hello Work and go in for an interview…
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Snack District
An area crowded with snack shops. Other than snack shops, there is also a boutique, a karaoke bar called Survive Bar that later becomes Kasuga and company’s gathering spot, and more.
—There are a number of tenement houses in the Snack District. It is a place for the adults living in Isezaki Ijincho to relax.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

—Adachi’s favorite karaoke bar, Survive Bar. While business is usually slow, after becoming friends with regular customer Adachi, it becomes Kasuga and company’s gathering spot.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Chinatown
Chinatown is one of the traditional areas of Yokohama. Crowded with a large number of Chinese restaurants, it is always bustling with people.
—A large gate stands as the symbol of Chinatown. At night the town is flashy and lively.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Kounai Station
An area centered on Kounai Station, a major station in the heart of Isezaki Ijincho. It is a place with a number of western-style buildings and a modern atmosphere. There are also many Play Spots here such as the Batting Center and Darts Bar Bee, where you can play darts.
—Kounai Station is located in the heart of the city, and the area around it is thriving.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

—Darts Bar Bee is a place where you can get food and play darts in the Kounai Station area. Darts arrows are also sold here, so if you want to play darts, go ahead and buy some.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Hamakita Park
Yokohama’s biggest park. Inside the park you will find numerous wagon shops, Dragon Kart, and more.
—Hamakita Park is a popular spot for dates among Yokohama residents.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

—The Dragon Kart reception garage. Fujisawa, a staff member standing outside the garage, is accepting applications to participate in a Dragon Kart tournament.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

■ The People Living in the City
Kasuga will encounter various unique characters in Isezaki Ijincho, Yokohama. Here is an introduction to some of the people that become key characters in this exciting drama.
Hamako (voiced by Jun Karasawa)
The manager of a small restaurant located in a corner of Isezaki Ijincho. She is helping women who have no choice but to sell their bodies to live.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Nonomiya (voiced by Youhei Tadano)
The manager of the Isezaki Ijincho brothel Otohime Land. Since he comes down very strongly on the women that work there, throwing out one harsh comment after the other, his reputation among the girls is not a good one.
