‘Game of Thrones’ Final Season Earns Record-Breaking 32 Emmy Nominations

HBO’s “Game of Thrones” slashed its way to a record-setting 32 Emmy nominations Tuesday for its eighth and final season, leading HBO back to dominance over Netflix, the streaming service that bumped it last year from atop the increasingly crowded television heap.

The bloodthirsty saga’s total eclipsed the all-time series record of 27 nods earned by “NYPD Blue” in 1994.

If “Game of Thrones” successfully defends it best drama series title and claims a fourth trophy, it will join the quartet of most-honored dramas that includes “Hill Street Blues,” ”L.A. Law,” ”The West Wing” and “Mad Men.”

The Emmy voters’ acclaim stands in sharp contrast to fan reaction to the show’s last hurrah, which included howls of laughter for a to-go coffee cup inadvertently included in one scene and a finale that detractors called unsatisfying. But the show’s ratings never faltered for the series based on George R.R. Martin’s novels, setting new highs for HBO.

A wealth of acting nominations for the cast and guest stars , including the show’s only previous winner, Peter Dinklage with three awards, helped “Game of Thrones” add to its already record haul of nominations, now at 160 total.

Series star Emilia Clarke’s decision to seek a best actress nomination after a series of supporting actress bids paid off. She’s competing in a category that’s notable for its diversity, including past winner Viola Davis for “How to Get Away with Murder” and repeat nominee Sandra Oh for “Killing Eve,” who has another chance to become the first actress of Asian descent to win the trophy. She lost last year to Claire Foy for Netflix’s “The Crown.”

Two actors of color, Billy Porter for “Pose” and previous winner Sterling K. Brown for “This Is Us,” earned drama series nods.

The rest of the drama series field includes “Better Call Saul,” ”Bodyguard,” ”Killing Eve,” ”Ozark,” ”Pose,” ”Succession” and, as the only network entry, “This is Us.”

Last year’s best comedy series, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” led the comedy pack with 20 bids, including for its star and defending champion Rachel Brosnahan. She’ll vie with Emmy record-holder Julia Louis-Dreyfus of “Veep,” who didn’t compete in last year’s awards because her breast cancer treatment delayed production of the political satire.

Louis-Dreyfus, who with Cloris Leachman shares the record for most Emmys won by a performer, eight, has a shot at solo glory if she wins again.

“Veep” received a total nine nominations for its final season, a warm farewell and one that wasn’t to be for “The Big Bang Theory,” the long-running sitcom that failed to capture a best comedy nod or any for its actors. The show has company in other hit sitcoms of the past: Neither “Friends” nor “Frasier” were nominated for best series for their final year, both in 2004.

TV academy members’ out-with-the-old approach created openings for a number of buzzy comedy newcomers and their stars and creators, including Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s “Fleabag” and Natasha Lyonne’s “Russian Doll.” Other best comedy contenders include “Barry,” which won acting trophies last year for Bill Hader and Henry Winkler, and sole network entry “The Good Place.”

A surprising entry: the quirky “Schitt’s Creek,” which received its first best comedy series nomination for its penultimate season and bids for stars Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara.

“Shocked. Grateful. (expletive) Thank you thank you thank you!!!” Christina Applegate tweeted after learning of her lead comedy series nomination for “Dead To Me.” ”Best part of the morning was my kid finding out and she screamed.”

Other top nominees include the nuclear disaster miniseries “Chernobyl” with 19 nominations and “Saturday Night Live,” which drew on Robert De Niro’s talents to play Robert Mueller last season, with 18. “When They See Us,” the miniseries that dramatized the Central Park Five case and its aftermath, received 16 bids.

HBO received a whopping 137 nominations Tuesday morning, riding the dragon wings of “Game of Thrones” and the big tallies for “Chernobyl” and “Barry.” Netflix, which last year ended HBO’s 17-year reign to win the most Emmy nominations, was bumped to second this year with 117. Amazon’s Prime Video was second to Netflix among streamers with 47 nominations.

Broadcast networks, steadily eclipsed by the rise of cable and now streaming, were far behind, with NBC getting 58 nods to top CBS’ 43, ABC’s 26 and Fox’s 18.

The 71st Emmy Awards will air Sept. 22 on Fox, with the host yet to be announced.

Seth Rogen kept talking about how bad 'Game of Thrones' was at SDCC

Seeing as how David Benioff and DB Weiss didn't turn up for the panel at San Diego Comic-Con for 'Game of Thrones', you can probably guess their reasons why.
While that panel passed off without any real incident - other than Nikolaj Coster-Waldau defending Jamie Lannister's death (ugh, really?) - the panel after it was definitely controversial.

Seth Rogen, who's an executive producer on 'Preacher', ended up spending quite a bit of time dissecting 'Game of Thrones' and just how poorly it all ended.

"I just wanna say we're following the 'Game of Thrones' panel, which is a f*cking nightmare, just objectively," Rogen began. "I also know that the showrunners didn't turn up, because they didn't want to answer questions about the show... I'm not one of the creators of 'Game of Thrones', I am the creator of other TV shows, so feel free to ask me any 'Game of Thrones' questions you might have throughout the night..." Rogen added, to some nervous laughter from his fellow panel members, including Ruth Negga and Dominic Cooper.

When asked by the moderator which finale would be more satisfying - 'Preacher' or 'Game of Thrones' - Rogen responded by saying, "Well, I'm here at least!"

It didn't stop there, either. Later on in the panel, Rogen segwayed into another jab on 'Game of Thrones', specifically calling out Bran being chosen as the King of Westeros. "I imagine those guys regret making Bran the King because, ultimately, he doesn't have the best story..." Rogen laughed. "(Arya) learned all that face shit, where'd it go?"

Not only that, Rogen responded to an audience question on whether or not it was a mistake not having Jamie kill Cersei in the final season, to which Rogen responded enthusiastically. "I do, honestly! You don't want to follow these people for three years and then have them die in rubble. Anti-climactic."

You can watch the full panel here, with the jabs at 'Game of Thrones' occurring at the 2 minute mark, again at 24 minutes in, and then roughly at 39 minutes in.

Game of Thrones' finale script explains why Drogon destroyed the Iron Throne
It wasn't about symbolism...

game-of-thrones-season-8-episode-6-drogon-spits-fire.jpg

Game of Thrones' eighth and final season climaxed in May. The response to it has been mixed: Over a million fans signed a petition for it to be remade, but it also scored 32 Emmy nods. One of those Emmy nominations is specifically for the season finale, The Iron Throne, which was nominated for Outstanding Writing For a Drama Series. As part of that process, the script for the episode has been made available to the public.

There are a bunch of takeaways from the script, but the biggest one is about Drogon. You'll recall that Drogon, Daenerys Targaryen's last remaining dragon, was enraged by Daenerys' death, and in a fit of rage he dracarys'd the hell out of the Iron Throne, melting it away to nothing. Why did he do that? Well, dragons are smart, so he was probably protesting against the symbol of the power-lust that led to Daenerys' death, right?

Wrong. The official reason, according to the episode's script, is just, well, because? Drogon's paroxysm of fire wasn't really aimed at anything, and the Iron Throne just happened to be where Drogon unleashed his flames. Really.
screen-shot-2019-08-01-at-11-08-30-am

An excerpt from The Iron Thrones' script.

As you can see in the above excerpt, the script refers to the Iron Throne as "not the target of Drogon's wrath, just a dumb bystander caught up in the conflagration."
The criticism heaped against HBO for the final season mainly had to do with lack of both plot and character development. Plot twists like Daenerys becoming the Mad Queen could have been successful, the argument runs, but it wasn't built up to in any meaningful way, making it feel like ad-hoc fan fiction. The reveal that Drogon melted the Iron Throne for essentially no reason will probably do little to sway this criticism.

Another portion of the script that's stood out to fans is when Arya in the episode tells the rest of the Starks her plan explore unknown lands. She asks Jon and Sansa if they know what's west of Westeros. "Jon and Sansa look at each other" the script says. "They both failed geography."

This, like Drogon's apparently unintentional attack on the Throne, became fodder for fan mockery.

:facepalm

Game of Thrones Creators Sign Massive Development Deal With Netflix

game-of-thrones-david-benioff-db-weiss-development-deal.jpg

Game of Thrones‘ creators have hit the loot train: David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have signed a massive, reportedly nine-figure overall deal with Netflix to develop new movies and TV shows for the streamer.

News of the deal comes from our sister site Deadline, which reports that Benioff and Weiss will write, direct and produce new projects exclusively for Netflix, with an eye toward developing a “water cooler series” in the vein of Thrones. First, though, Benioff and Weiss will work on a series of Star Wars films for Disney, the first of which is slated to hit theaters in 2022.

“We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix,” chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement. “They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members.”

Benioff and Weiss are best known as the creators and executive producers of HBO’s Game of Thrones, which wrapped up an eight-season run earlier this year. The pair’s work on the final season faced heavy criticism from fans and the media, but Thrones did earn a record 32 Emmy nominations for its farewell run and hit series-high ratings, with 19.3 million total viewers watching the series finale across all HBO platforms.

HBO did announce another series, the alt-history drama Confederate, from Benioff and Weiss, but the concept sparked controversy, and the project has been in limbo ever since. (Earlier this year, HBO president Casey Bloys said Confederate was merely delayed, not scrapped altogether.) The network is also developing a number of Thrones spinoffs, including a prequel starring Naomi Watts — but Benioff and Weiss won’t be involved in the production of those.

Desenvolvimento péssimo, rushado, enfiaram no rabo vários lore.

‘Star Wars’ Setback: ‘Game Of Thrones’ Duo David Benioff & D.B. Weiss Exit Trilogy

David-Benioff-D.B.-Weiss.jpeg

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the duo who in 2011 launched the singular screen sensation known as Game of Thrones, have walked away from their much-publicized deal with Disney’s Lucasfilm to launch a feature film trilogy in 2022.

Benioff and Weiss were supposed to usher in the post-Skywalkera era of the Star Wars brand with a 2022 new-start story that would stake out a new frontier for the era-defining cinema brand created by George Lucas. The Emmy-winning pair cited their historic deal with Netflix. They said their enthusiasm for Star Wars remains boundless but, regrettably, their schedule is full up.

“We love Star Wars,” the pair said in a statement to Deadline. “When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.”

That 2022 release date made the Benioff/Weiss start-up the next-in-line Star Wars installment following this December’s The Rise of Skywalker, the finale chapter of the Skywalker family chronicles that have been captivating moviegoers since 1977.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has plenty of other Star Wars projects in the hopper — The Rise of Skywalker in December, The Madalorian in 15 days on Disney+, and the ramping Ewan McGregor series, to name just three — so it’s unclear how much of a setback the now-nixed trilogy presents. There’s no shortage of upcoming collaborators lined up, either, among them Rian Johnson and Kevin Feige.

Kennedy didn’t close shut any doors in her send-off statement on Monday: “David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers,. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”

Clearly, it’s a big-fizzle ending for the firecracker-fuse headline from February 2018 when the deal was announced. But the duo’s deal arguably lost some luster during the much-maligned final season of Game of Thrones earlier this year as many fans questioned whether the GOT creators had the storytelling chops to handle a Jedi saga.

In the end, however, it appears the tandem’s deficiency was in time, not talent. In August, Deadline broke the news that the GOT duo had signed a nine-figure deal with Netflix and, on Monday, that commitment was the one that brought about the end of the Great Westeros Experiment by Disney and Lucasfilm.

“There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects,” the GOT pair said in a statement to Deadline. “So we are regretfully stepping away.”

Duas franquias multi-bilionarias estragadas.... e contando...

‘Game Of Thrones’ Showrunners David Benioff And D.B. Weiss Confirmed The Worst Suspicions Of The Fanbase

960x0.jpg

David Benioff and D.B Weiss accept the award for outstanding writing for a drama series for “Game of Thrones” at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards

After the disastrous final season of Game of Thrones, which left many fans furious at the flat conclusion to an epic story, writers/showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have been extremely quiet, even going so far as to cancel their scheduled appearance at Comic Con.

At this point, every single scene, character arc (or lack thereof), and poorly-planned plot point has been thoroughly dissected and dismissed, by disappointed fans, critics, and YouTubers.

Blame fell squarely on the shoulders of Benioff and Weiss, with Game of Thrones fans recognizing that the sudden shift in quality was entirely due to decisions made in the writing room, and were generally mature enough not to blame the actors or crew members. (Benioff and Weiss are due to tackle Star Wars next, so we should wish them, and their future cast and crew, good luck).

But Benioff and Weiss emerged from their public hibernation to attend a panel at the Austin Film Festival, and finally answer some questions from fans. The two were brutally honest, essentially admitting that they were never fully qualified for the job from the beginning.

Heroic Twitter user @ForArya documented the Q&A session, and much of it reads like satire, written by furious Game of Thrones fans.

Benioff and Weiss still aren’t sure why George R.R. Martin entrusted them with his magnum opus, as the two didn’t have any comparable experience, or even an appreciation of the book’s themes.

It seems that the two men aimed for a moonshot, and somehow, hit their target, suddenly tasked with retelling an immensely complex story, without fully understanding it. In fact, Benioff once said: “Themes are for eighth-grade book reports,” which tells you all you need to know about his dedication to the art of storytelling.

If you’re wondering why a wildly successful writer is comfortable dismissing “themes” as childish and unnecessary, it should be noted that Benioff’s father is the former head of Goldman Sachs. Do we live in a meritocracy? Well, Bret Stephens still writes for the New York Times, so ...

The two went on to admit that they had absolutely no idea how to work with costume designers (kind of important for a fantasy series), and described their experience making Thrones as “an expensive film school.”

On some level, I almost admire their candor. They could have come up with excuses and defended their hideous creative choices, but they realized that there was nowhere left to hide. Fans were almost unanimously united in their disappointment, and little of the anger has evaporated in the months since.

Oddly enough, the show was at its peak during its early seasons, when Benioff and Weiss were still learning how to do their jobs. The two initially downplayed the fantasy elements of the books (a decision that helped ground the universe before dragons started flying through the sky), and wanted to expand the audience to non-fantasy fans. This worked in their favor at the beginning of the show, and helped expand it into a pop culture juggernaut, but meant that the intricacies of Martin’s lore were never explored.

The Faceless Men, the Lord of Light, the Night King; all magical elements of the story that were never resolved, despite clearly being vital to the story. Hence, “the Prince that was promised” never showed up, and Beric Dondarrion’s grand destiny was teased, but never delivered.

Benioff and Weiss were elevated to success by HBO’s polished infrastructure, the architecture of George R.R. Martin’s books, and the immense talent of every individual that surrounded them, particularly the actors.

They were exposed only when they ran out of material, and had to finish the story themselves. Amusingly, the two never went online to read criticisms of the show from fans, who clearly understood the books better than they did.

Well, Benioff searched online, once, but the results “upset him,” so he never did it again.

It seems that the Game of Thrones writer’s room was a “safe space,” shielded from criticism and outsider perspective. In a way, it’s a relief to finally understand why the show went in such a bizarre direction; there was no one there to tell Benioff and Weiss that their ideas were nonsensical.

Nobody was there to tell them to stop inserting random rape scenes for shock value, or that Euron Greyjoy was dreadful, or that the Great Houses of Westeros finally putting aside their differences and crowning a wheelchair-bound shaman as king was immensely, indescribably stupid.

Kevin Smith once said: "In Hollywood, you just kind of fail upwards," and I think that’s a pretty apt description of how Benioff and Weiss created their hit show.

But an even better analogy comes from Hunter S. Thompson, who famously responded to an impending deadline by ripping the tattered, intoxicated scribblings from his notebook and sending them to his editor, producing his famous article, "The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved."

Thompson described his accidental success as “falling down an elevator shaft and landing in a pool full of mermaids.” Well, Benioff and Weiss have swum with the mermaids, and hopefully, they learned how to keep their heads above water, because there’s another elevator shaft down below, and at the bottom is a swamp full of ravenous, flesh-eating Star Wars fans.

Let’s hope they learned how to talk to costume designers, at least.

Update: According to Deadline, Benioff and Weiss have (wisely) walked away from Star Wars, citing time constraints, having signed a nine-figure deal with Netflix: “There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.”
