YouTuber Eric July Says DC Stands for “Dead Company,” Transgender Amazon Reveal Destroys Wonder Woman Lore

YouTube commentator Eric July, also known as YoungRippa59, doesn’t like DC’s introduction of trans-Amazons into their canon in the new comic Nubia and the Amazons.

In a recent video, July declares the publisher is a dying brand whose letters stand for “Dead Company” and that they should be left to their fate over this stunt, which he believes is not intended to get publicity anymore than it is to sell comics.

“Bad publicity can literally ruin a brand,” he says, having “seen it happen” himself many times as someone who doesn’t believe “all publicity is good publicity.”

July points out, one, “nobody who uses that phrase has actually owned anything,” and two, the publicity isn’t translating into sales or making money. “When you go look at the NBD stands, they don’t seem to tell a story that these people are making money,” he continued.

Then, after facepalming at the Screen Rant headline “Wonder Woman’s Sisters Bring First Transgender Amazon to DC Comics,” he proclaims Nubia – Diana Prince’s actual sister of ethnic background – “has been utterly destroyed.”

She was around for decades but was only brought back to push “social justice horses–,” because as July observes, all they care about is “what statements they can make” while running lore “into the absolute ground.”

They do this to please social media users of Twitter and Instagram, for instance, thinking “that represents their customers.”

Reading the article and the summary for Nubia and the Amazons #1 by Stephanie Williams and Vita Ayala, July cracks up wondering how Ayala still gets work and scoffed at the claim from Williams the new Amazon, a transperson named Bia, is not just a box to tick.

He asserts it’s clear they are trying to tick boxes of representation by virtue of Williams and Ayala’s remarks. “The fact that you’re mentioning that lets us know,” July reacts.

Bia’s gender identity was not announced before the book was published, because per the reason Ayala gave on Twitter, Bia is supposed to develop “in an organic way.”

So, in light of DC’s politics and storylines, July emphasizes they are a dead-and-gone company and if you want to give a new title the benefit of the doubt, his advice is “Stop it!” He doesn’t expect them or Marvel and who they hire to change.

Additionally, if you want to scratch the itch for some reading material from them, he urges you to buy back issues – but not the reprints as they still make money from those.

At the end of the day, “Batman is merchandise and brand sales” to them, July says. Bruce Wayne is whatever “they need him to be that day,” and they don’t care about him or any character any longer.

Jogou Breath of the Wild?

Box Office: Eternals Takes Spot, Unseats Shang-Chi As 3rd Worst Opening Weekend For A MCU Film

2021.11.08-03.30-boundingintocomics-6189428272085.jpg

Marvel Studios’ latest entry into their Marvel Cinematic Universe took top spot at the box office with an opening weekend of $71 million.

While the film unseated Dune from the top spot with its $71 million opening weekend debut, it underperformed box office predictions and had one of the worst opening weekends in Marvel Cinematic Universe history.

The-Numbers featured two box office predictions for the film. It underperformed both projections.

First, the box office tracking website predicted the film would earn $74.4 million based on a model created on opening weekends for similar movies.

Second, they used the film’s Thursday preview box office take to extrapolate to the entire weekend. That model predicted the film would gross $78.8 million.

Not only did Eternals underperform the predictions from The-Numbers, it also underperformed predictions from Box Office Pro.

Box Office Pro originally projected the film would have an opening weekend between $80 million and $102 million. However, they significantly adjusted their prediction range to between $67 and $92 million at the end of October.

Then just before the weekend, they claimed it would make $78 million.

With it’s $71 million opening weekend, Eternals took the third worst opening weekend spot for a MCU film from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings based on inflation adjusted numbers.

The worst opening weekend belongs to Ant-Man. It grossed $57.2 million back in 2015. If you adjust for inflation that’s $66.2 million.

The second worst opening weekend is The Incredible Hulk, which earned $55.4 million in its opening weekend back in 2008. Adjusted for inflation that’s $70.6 million.

Even if you don’t adjust for inflation, Eternals’ opening weekend makes it the fifth worst opening weekend in MCU history. It only bests The Incredible Hulk, Ant-Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Thor.

Captain America: The First Avenger grossed $65 million its opening weekend in 2011 and Thor brought in $65.7 million in 2001 as well.

Despite Eternals’ underperforming box office estimates, it’s possible the film could have some legs. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings previously held the spot for the third worst opening weekend for a MCU film when it debuted back in September with a $75.3 million haul.

That film has moved up the charts with a total haul in North American theaters of $223.7 million so far and a worldwide gross of $417.8 million. It is the highest grossing film in North America for all of 2021 so far.

Even with that top spot for 2021, the film is still the 9th worst grossing MCU film only beating Ant-Man and the Wasp, Thor: The Dark World, Black Widow, Thor, Ant-Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Incredible Hulk, and Eternals.

However, if you factor in inflation it becomes the 7th worst grossing the film. Ant-Man and the Wasp’s haul of $216.6 in 2018 is about $264.2 million with inflation.

Thor: The Dark World’s $206.3 million in 2013 is about $251.6 million with inflation.

While Eternals took the top spot, Dune came in second bringing in another $7.6 million. The film’s domestic gross now sits at $83.9 million. It’s worldwide gross is now $330.4 million.

Daniel Craig’s final James Bond film, No Time to Die, raked in another $6.1 million domestically. It’s domestic gross is now $143.1 million. It’s worldwide gross is $667.4 million.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage took the fourth spot with $4.4 million. It’s domestic gross is now $197 million. The film’s worldwide gross sits at $424.6 million.

Rounding out the top five is Ron’s Gone Wrong. It grossed $3.6 million. The film’s total domestic gross is now $17.5 million with a $46.4 million worldwide gross.

Overall at the box office, the weekend’s gross was $107.6 million.

Amazon’s answer to Game of Thrones has ‘more naked men than women’, says Rosamund Pike

The Wheel of Time, a multi-million dollar ‘feminist fantasy’ due to launch later this month, takes a different approach, says the actress

ByAnita Singh, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR9 November 2021 • 6:00am

If Game of Thrones was notorious for female nudity, television’s latest fantasy epic may act as a corrective.

The Wheel of Time, a lavish Amazon Studios series due to launch later this month, will feature men with their clothes off rather than women, according to its star, Rosamund Pike.

The show is based on the books by Robert Jordan and features a cast of thousands, with the budget running to $10 million per episode.

Some fans have dubbed The Wheel of Time “feminist fantasy”, because only the women characters are able to channel their world’s magic powers – including Pike’s warrior Moiraine Damodred.

Speaking to Radio Times, Pike said: “You see many more naked men than you see naked women, which is quite pleasing, since women have been asked to expose themselves forever and a day.

“We’ve got all the boys frantically dieting and working out hard for their naked scenes and all of the women going out for lovely dinners.”

The actress said Jordan’s background in the US army was relevant to his depiction of the characters.

“When I found out that Robert Jordan had been a helicopter gunner in Vietnam, I thought, oh, that’s where this big fantasy world originates. That’s why he’s interested in men who had power and abused it and broke the world,” she said.

Pike said she had received numerous letters from fans of the books, most of them men. “Many of them have said that actually these women in The Wheel of Time were mentors and role models for them growing up, which I thought was very interesting.”

The new Game of Thrones?

Amazon is hoping for a hit on the scale of Game of Thrones, which ran from 2011 to 2019. There are 14 books in the Wheel of Time series, with sales of 90 million.
The streaming giant said it was drawn to the story because it has a “timely narrative featuring powerful women at the core”.

Pike said the popularity of the books, alongside the amount of money being spent on the adaptation, were a large responsibility.

“Amazon cannot afford to muck it up because it’s such a monumental piece of work. They can’t let it fail. It’s so magnificent what they can achieve with it,” she said.

Actresses who appeared on Game of Thrones have admitted to feeling uncomfortable with the amount of nudity that was required.

Emilia Clarke, who played the role of Daenerys Targaryen from the age of 23, said it came as a shock.

“I took the job and then they sent me the scripts and I was reading them and it was like, oh, there’s the catch,” she said after the series ended. “But I’d come fresh from drama school, and I approached [it] as a job.”

She found herself “on a film set completely naked” and said her approach was: “I’m going to go cry in the bathroom and then I’m going to come back and do the scene and it’s going to be completely fine. But it was definitely hard.

“Now things are very different and I’m a lot more savvy about what I’m comfortable with, and what I’m now ok with doing.”

Her co-star, Carine van Houte, who played Melisandre, has said that the #MeToo movement had made her re-evaluate her career, including Game of Thrones.

“In retrospect, I thought: ‘Why did that scene have to be nude? What was that normal?’ I did question things,” she said. “The times have changed in many ways.”

Van Houte said that #MeToo led to later series of Game of Thrones cutting down on female nudity, which “showed that you don’t need it".
