The chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment has suggested the PlayStation 5 will focus more on multiplayer games than the PlayStation 4 has done.
Although the PlayStation 3 was initially a failure thanks to its beginning price tag, lacklustre network, and overblown promises, Sony’s decision to focus on single-player, narrative-driven epics eventually paved the way for the PlayStation 4’s unbelievable success. Titles like God Of War, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and – my favourite – Persona 5 have shown EA and other publishers that single-player games aren’t a dying art. However, for the next chapter Sony’s aim is to continue providing unforgettable stories that rival Hollywood, along with redoubling their efforts on multiplayer for the PlayStation 5.
Speaking to Business Insider, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s chairman Shawn Layden spoke about multiplayer games like GTA Online, and how he believes there’s still a market for fading away features like couch co-op. Layden also mentioned how the PlayStation’s exclusive line-up has been lacking in multiplayer in recent years, which is why Sony will be redoubling their efforts with the PlayStation 5.
“Couch co-op — I mean that’s a whole category I think the industry needs to look back at,” Layden said. “We have that with sports titles, and some racing titles, but not with much else. And I think that speaks to the power of the Internet on the one hand, but otherwise we might wanna revisit that to get more family engagement in the gaming experience.”
“But, no, I was referencing more with the things like GTA 5 Online, or you look at Call of Duty, or Fortnite, or any of those experiences,” he continued. “Worldwide Studios, like I say, we’ve been going really heavy into story-driven gaming. The power of the narrative. Big, spectacular experiences. But not a whole lot in the multiplayer side of things, I think. That’s an area where you will likely see us start to make more noise in the new term.”
