Kylotonn, the French studio behind the well-regarded WRC and Isle of Man TT series, has acquired the Test Drive licence from Atari, and there are veterans of the Eden Games team that made it working at the studio. It's exciting, but also a little scary.

Kylotonn is a small studio owned by a small publisher. Test Drive Unlimited was something of a scrappy underdog in its day, too, of course, but back then its only competition in open-world racing was Need for Speed, a very different beast. Now, a new TDU would be going up against a game that has taken its rough frame and polished it to a gleaming finish: Playground Games' Forza Horizon. Why bother?

It is, however, only fair that the French series returns to try to grab a slice of this pie: it wrote the recipe. Forza Horizon simply wouldn't exist if it wasn't for 2006's Test Drive Unlimited.

Released so early in the last generation that it beat the PS3 to market, TDU dreamed of a different kind of real-world road racing to the studious lapping and tweaking of Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport. Inspired by the original 1987 Test Drive's winding ribbon of cliffside tarmac, this would be a game about the glory of the open road; about exploring exotic, sun-kissed landscapes; about freedom and danger as you weave through traffic; about cruising as well as going flat out.

4, 5 e 6 são horríveis.

Pra quem não sabe a história de Test Drive, os primeiros foram feitos por caras que foram parar na Eletronic Arts para fazerem os primeiros Need for Speed.

Daí, a equipe B, o resto, as sobras, ficaram com a tarefa de fazer esses Test Drives, com calendários super apertados, eles não tinham tempo para fazer sequências propriamente ditas, então eram apenas os mesmos jogos com alguns carros novos, algumas pistas novas e poucas melhorias.

E a dirigibilidade era horrível, você tinha a sensação de ter o controle do carro e de que era capaz de fazer as curvas, mas por algum motivo não rolava. E a física de colisão tornava tudo pior. Isso aliado a uma IA que estava mais interessada em te atrapalhar e tirar da corrida para proteger os líderes mais à frente tornava cada corrida uma tortura.

Podia ser bem arcade como os antigos, o 6 foi um dos que mais joguei. Era divertido demais.

Realmente TDU criou um tipo diferente de jogo de carros e foi bem legal mesmo, problema que agora o Forza Horizon elevou o nível demais, a única chance é aproveitar criando algo diferente enquanto o Horizon está meio que caindo no "mais do mesmo" (mas vejam bem, não é uma critica)

Gostei e joguei bastante Unlimited 2. Porém, a produtora faliu e perderam a oportunidade de fazer um TDU3 antes que o Forza Horizon pegasse toda a atenção.

Ali no começo da década, entre 2011 e 2014, algumas produtoras perderam ótimas oportunidades de emplacar sequências de jogos famosos, e quando lançaram a coisa já tinha perdido o sentido. Um grande exemplo foi a série Darksiders. O segundo Darksiders foi lançado em 2012 e o terceiro, claramente ultrapassado e sem graça, apenas em 2018. Entre 2012 e 2018 muita água rolou.

Para emplacar um novo Test Drive depois de tanto tempo, os caras vão ter que demonstrar muita capacidade e inovação. De 2011 pra cá teve um monte de Need for Speed, um monte de Forza, o mundo da simulação teve um monte de coisa boa como Project Cars e Asseto Corsa. Sem falar que o próprio gênero de jogos de corrida está desgastado há vários anos. Pois no final só tem 3 "tipos" de jogos de corrida: arcade estilo NFS, simulação e semi simulação e mundo aberto tipo Forza Horizon, que foi justamente o tipo de corrida que o Test Drive Unlimited perdeu há quase 10 anos.

Espero que o mapa seja menor que os antigos, do tamanho dos de Forza Horizon 3 e 4 já está bom, se for igual The crew e os antigos Test drive unlimited passo longe.

Test Drive Unlimited 1 e 2 foram um dos melhores jogos de corrida que eu já joguei na vida, e olha que de corrida eu já devo ter jogado quase tudo da era PS2 pra cá.

Eu nem me atrevo a tentar explicar a importância que esses dois games tiveram no gênero arcade daí em diante. Forza Horizon, que muitos consideram o topo do gênero de corrida arcade na geração passada, bebeu muito da fonte de Test Drive. Muitos dos desenvolvedores da Playground trabalharam em TDU antes, é muito óbvia a referência pra quem jogou ambos. The Crew a mesma coisa com o aspecto MMO.

Enfim, tá aí o jogo que eu mais espero até agora. A real é que arrebentaram com os games de mundo aberto na geração passada: NFS está fraquíssimo, The Crew foi um desastre, Driveclub foi descontinuado e Forza Horizon é bom, mas muito limitado e não aparenta querer sair da zona de conforto. Esse Test Drive é a chance de retomar a ideia de que games de corrida não precisam ser tipo Trackmania.

Não deve ter nada em bom estado para mostrar, melhor assim.

A verdade é que TD não tem um histórico de jogos bons, mas sim mais versões meia boca ou ruins. Como é um título com potencial grande a galera sempre cria uma expectativa grande. Espero que finalmente acertem mesmo.

O jogo anterior da série (TDU2) tinha 2116km² e não lembro de reclamarem que era grande demais.

Concordo com a questão do open world, eu mesmo adoro forza horizon mas queria mesmo era um jogo estilo driveclub/ project gotham racing/ metropolis street racer.
