Supergirl Heads to The CW For Season 2

supergirlflashworldsfinestclips-175846.png

Supergirl is headed to The CW for its second season, EW reports.

The network, which already hosts DC Comics hits The Flash, iZombie, Arrow, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow, will see the Girl of Steel join its already-overflowing lineup next fall.

704711711

Earlier this year, The CW renewed all 11 of its ongoing series. Containment, currently being billed as a miniseries event, was originally speculated as a contender for a slot on next year's schedule, but with Supergirl being added to the schedule that might be a hard thing to manage.

Les Moonves, the head of CBS, had previously said that the network planned to renew all of its freshman series, including Supergirl, but recent reports have suggested that the network has been sparring with Warner Bros. over licensing fees.

Supergirl had the biggest debut of the 2015-2016 season, but lost about half of its viewers over the course of its first season. While it remained one of CBS's biggest shows, the cost of making the series is significant. Even before licensing fees, it's reported that Supergirl costs about $3 million per episode.

Rumors have indicated that the show will head to Vancouver, where tax incentives will reduce the cost of production. In its first season, Supergirl filmed in Los Angeles. It's not yet clear whether any members of the cast might not make the trek to Canada to film, or what time slot The CW will place Supergirl in. The CW would not confirm for EW whether the reported move to Vancouver will actually happen.

One of the highest-rated and most buzzed-about episodes of Supergirl this year was its crossover with The Flash. A move to The CW -- especially if the movie is also physical and production is relocated to Vancouver -- likely would mean an increase in crossover opportunities with the DC Universe set up at the network. Supergirl shares executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg with Arrow, The Flash, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

Supergirl Season 2 Gets 22 Episodes, Relocates to Vancouver

When the news broke earlier tonight that Supergirl would head to The CW for its second season, nothing else in the way of details was formally announced.

It seems, though, that the silence has been broken on social media. David Harewood, who plays the Martian Manhunter on the series, took to Twitter to confirm that the move will not only be a network one, but a physical one as well: as rumors have maintained for a week or so, production for the series will move to Vancouver for Season 2.

According to Harewood, the series will also have a 22-episode order -- two more episodes than Season One and six more than The CW's other prestige DC super-series, Legends of Tomorrow.

CBS.

Superman Will Appear in Supergirl Season 2 Premiere

superman-supergirl-tv-184951.jpg

log

The Man of Steel is coming to National City. Superman will appear on the first two episodes of Supergirl season 2, flying to television just as Supergirl flies to its new home on The CW. The character has not yet been cast, but his appearance was revealed via a press release, perhaps because casting announcements have just been sent out. "We are currently in the casting process for this role," Warner Bros. TV announced, implying that we won't see big-screen Superman Henry Cavill crossing over to the land of television, in keeping with the previous separation of DC's TV and Movies.

"Greg, Ali and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl. Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!" said executive producer Andrew Kreisberg.

The character of Superman has already appeared on Supergirl, just only as a purely CGI character, and always with his face obscured. Clark Kent gave Kara some encouragement via instant message throughout the first season of the show, which aired on CBS, as well. Previously, it was speculated that he wouldn't fully appear on the series, as it seemed most characters appearing on the big screen in feature films were being held off from the small screen - characters like Amanda Waller and Deadshot (and the whole concept of the Suicide Squad), for example, were killed off on Arrow as the Suicide Squadfilm approached.

Kreisberg previously told Comicbook.com last November that they hadn't "been jonesing to have Superman on [the show]." He explained that it was a purely creative decision, though, by those running the show (Kreisberg, along with fellow EPs Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler), and that there wasn't "anything [they've] asked for that was not given to [them]."

The EP also said in that previous interview that "if you're going to cast Superman, you've got cast Superman right!" That seems to click with the idea of announcing the character's appearance while the casting process is ongoing.

"For us, Superman is more of an idea than it is a personification of the character, so we're more than happy to have him backlit," Kreisberg said of his season one appearances. "We're perfectly happy to have him swoop in, save Kara in Episode Three, because the real heart of the story is that she then kicks Reactron's butt. She's the one that takes him down, and that's what much more important for us.

"So it's not like we've been asking for more Superman or can we do it like this or can we have him in this. For us, we're perfectly happy with the amount of Superman that we've had because it's the exact amount that we've asked for."

Superman comes to Supergirl as the show joins the DCTV line-up on The CW. Starting this fall, The CW will have a DC Comics-based superhero TV show Monday-Thursday nights at 8pm. The network has also already announced a four-way crossover between the series, though they've given no details on how exactly that will happen. Currently, Supergirl exists on an alternate Earth from the other three shows, Arrow, The Flash, and Time-Traveling epic Legends of Tomorrow, though thanks to the antics of the last two, it is easy to see how they could either travel to that world or merge it into their own sometime this season.

Supergirl currently employs two former members of the House of El, as Helen Slater, who played Supergirl in the 80s film and Dean Cain, who was Superman on Lois and Clark in the 90s, appear as Kara's adoptive parents. Some fans have petitioned to have Smallville's Tom Welling, who played a young Clark Kent on that series for ten years, to return as Superman on Supergirl, though those petitions haven't typically flown very far.

Supergirl Season 2 Adds Lex Luthor's Sister, Maggie Sawyer, Snapper Carr, and More

supergirl-cbs-182296.jpg

log

(Photo: CBS)

Supergirl is staffing up for the move to The CW and season two with five more new characters, including two series regulars and three recurring roles. The new characters pull heavily from the pages of DC Comics, and imply some major shifts in the dynamic of the show's current lineup.

The two series regulars are Lena Luthor and Nick Farrow. Lena is the sister of Lex Luthor, leaving Metropolis for National City to "get out from under the shadow" of her brother, as TV Line reports. Her age range for casting is listed as 25-35, and she's listed as sexy, smart, and determined. Farrow, meanwhile, is a new "leading man" type and the son of a famous reporter who joins CatCo. "In hanging out with Kara, the hero in Nick might finally come out," reads the official description, but no one named Farrow exists at DC Comics. Hopefully Lena's presence doesn't mean Max Lord is leaving National City as its resident ambiguously-evil genius.

The recurring roles are The Doctor, Snapper Carr, and a detective named Maggie. No, it's not a time-travelling alien joining the cast, this Doctor is the leader of Project Cadmus, a female character who experiments on people using alien technology. Naming that character Serling Roquette would make sense, as she's a Cadmus scientist in the comics.

Snapper Carr, in the show, is a "veteran journalist appointed by Cat Grant to remake the news division by going old school." In DC Comics, Lucas "Snapper" Carr has had a long association with the Justice League, and was later made into a journalist in other media. He appeared in that capacity frequently in the Justice League animated series, voiced by Jason Marsden. There have been rumors that Cat Grant, played by Calista Flockhart, may move to a non-series regular role (rumors say it's because Flockhart is hesitant to relocate to Vancouver for the shooting season), and the character description here seems to support that.

Lastly is Maggie, an "out and proud detective" which points directly to Maggie Sawyer. In the pages of DC Comics, Sawyer worked in both the Metropolis Special Crimes Unit and the Gotham City Police Department. As an out lesbian, Sawyer dated and became engaged to Kate Kane, Batwoman, in the New 52 relaunch of DC Comics. On the show, she'll be working for the Science Police, an agency dealing with metahuman and extra-terrestrial threats that sounds like (if it's anything like the comics version) it will be a more openly-operating unit than the DEO.

Casting is underway now for all five roles.

Supergirl season two will air Mondays at 8pm on The CW starting this fall. Superman will also join the cast, thus far confirmed as appearing in the first two episodes of the season.

http://comicbook.com/2016/06/08/supergirl-season-2-adds-lex-luthors-sister-maggie-sawyer-snapper/

Superman chegando.

Teen Wolf star Tyler Hoechlin has been cast in the iconic role of Superman/Clark Kent on The CW's Supergirl.
