Calista Flockhart Returns to Supergirl as Cat Grant in Season 2

cat-grant-173494.png

Calista Flockhart is confirmed to return to Supergirl as a recurring guest star and begins production in Vancouver next week.

She’ll be appearing in multiple episodes beginning with the October 10th second season premiere on The CW.

"Supergirl wouldn't be Supergirl without the amazing Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant. We are so excited Calista has agreed to continue on the show when she can. We and the audience love to see her on screen," said Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg.

When the series moved from CBS to The CW and production moved from Los Angeles to Vancouver, rumors flew that Flockhart would not make the move. At Comic Con over the weekend, reports started to trickle out that the actress would return but in a reduced role.

Cat Grant was created in the comics by Marv Wolfman and Jerry Ordway as a potential love interest for Clark Kent/Superman, but the relationship fizzled pretty early on and Cat was left pining away for the hunky Kansas farmboy in the newsroom. There was at one point even an implication that she and Jimmy had some chemistry before they developed her character in another direction, playing up drama with her ex-husband and her young son, who was eventually murdered by a supervillain.

She's another character who's been involved in almost every iteration of the franchise on film, but in the case of Grant, she doesn't get nearly the endearing depiction that Lois Lane or Lana Lang do. In Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, she was depicted as a hyper-sexualized bimbo and in Smallville, Cat came in late and literally, physically replaced Lois in the room for a while when the latter was away. Her interest in Clark was small, and she was used mostly as a pretty face to keep male viewers content while Erica Durance was gone and as a kind of media zombie for the Glorious Godfrey set during the final season's Darkseid storyline. Arguably her most memorable episode revolved around the way she rejected Superman and embraced Booster Gold.

Supergirl was the first time Grant has been given a lot to do in a live-action interpretation, and as a series regular in the first season she was not only Kara's direct superior but the "Queen of All Media." This year, their relationship will be different as Kara still works for CatCo, but not as Cat's personal assistant anymore.

Supergirl returns to the airwaves on October 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

The Flash eLegends of Tomorrow.

Supergirl and The Flash Crossing Over for Musical Episodes This Season

supergirl-flash-191573.jpg

(Photo: CW)

The Flash and Supergirl, both starring Glee alums and accomplished singers Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist, will crossover for a special two-part musical episode this season, in addition to the four-part crossover hitting all for DC shows on The CW.

The announcement came at the TCA presentation for The CW Thursday, opening up their DC TV shows panel with a bang. The crossover will include one episode of each series. While they plan to use "pre-existing songs" for the bulk of the musical numbers, they're exploring writing one original song for each episode, giving The Flash and Supergirl each their own brand-new song.

A musical episode for each of the two shows has been an oft-asked question, since both leads have sung - and even on TV - in the past. While karaoke teased the idea on The Flash, most producers and stars, when asked, have simply said things like "that would be fun." Now, it's happening, and it's happening this season as part of a two-episode crossover.

"So many times, it's a musical episode off the set," EP Greg Berlanti said. "On all of the shows we like to use all of the actors' talents." He teased that there will "probably be an element of the songs being in the characters' heads," rather than them being a main plot point. While nothing is confirmed, Berlanti does hope to bring in some actors from Arrowand Legends of Tomorrow for a musical number or two, as well. Victor Garber, John Barrowman, and more actors have singing backgrounds, after all.

We will keep hope alive that Music Meister, voiced by Neil Patrick Harris on Batman: The Brave and the Bold in a musical episode, will be the reason why they're suddenly singing.

Supergirl and The Flash debut on Monday and Tuesday night at 8pm the first week of October, 2016.

Chris Wood To Play Mon-El in Supergirl
mon-el-194382.jpg

(Photo: DC Entertainment)

After weeks of speculation and a Comic Con International: San Diego panel that gave away a few tantalizing bits of information but not the whole story, The CW today revealed that Chris Wood will play Mon-El in Supergirl.

The character has been reinvented a few times over the years, but in all versions serves as a hero with abilities similar to those of Superman -- a Daxamite, an alien race with similar powers to Kryptonians but a weakness to lead instead of Kryptonite -- and most often he has ties to the Legion of Super-Heroes.

A Legion of Super-Heroes flight ring appeared in an episode of The Flash and then again in an episode of Supergirl last year. The team's last live-action appearance was on Smallville.

Mon-El played a major role in the World of New Krypton storyline, elements of which appeared in the first season of Supergirl. It isn't clear whether his presence indicates more of that storyline playing through the show, or something with the Legion of Super-Heroes, or both.

The first season of Supergirl ended on a pretty huge cliffhanger: a small, Kryptonian-looking rocket, nearly identical to the ones that brought Superman and Supergirl to Earth, crash-landed outside of National City. Upon opening it, Supergirl looked at its contents, surprised, and that was it.

We know that whoever she was looking at, was inside a rocket that appeared to be Kryptonian in design. But the real question is WHO could be inside a Kryptonian rocket, bound for Earth, just as the battle for the planet's survival wrapped up? And now we know.

Supergirl had the biggest debut of the 2015-2016 season, but lost about half of its viewers over the course of its first season. While it remained one of CBS's biggest shows, the cost of making the series is significant. It's reported that Supergirl costs about $3 million per episode.

The show will head to Vancouver, where tax incentives will reduce the cost of production. In its first season, Supergirl filmed in Los Angeles.

One of the highest-rated and most buzzed-about episodes of Supergirl this year was its crossover with The Flash. A move to The CW -- especially if the movie is also physical and production is relocated to Vancouver -- will mean an increase in crossover opportunities with the DC Universe set up at the network. Supergirl shares executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg with Arrow, The Flash, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow. A four-way crossover has already been promised for the coming broadcast season.

Besides Woods, actors Tyler Hoechlin and Ian Gomez have joined the cast as Superman and Snapper Carr, respectively.

Supergirl will air on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW starting in the fall.

Miss Martian is Headed to Supergirl

miss-martian-163625.png

J'Onn J'Onzz the Martian Manhunter won't be the only Martian on Earth for long.

David Harewood's character will soon be joined by Shannon Leal as M'gann M'orzz, better known as Miss Martian.

The character, a major player in Geoff Johns's run on Teen Titans, is probably best known to TV audiences from her appearances on the animated cult hit Young Justice.

Leal has a number of notable credits to her name, including multi-episode arcs on Private Practice, Hellcats, and Grimm.

M'gann is actually a White Martian who decided to become "good" and elected to look like a Green Martian instead. The concept of White Martians was introduced in the eleventh episode of Supergirl's first season, when Martian Manhunter had to face one down.

There had been some speculation that due to the on-again, off-again Titans series that Warner Bros. Television was trying to develop, Miss Martian may have been off the table for Supergirl. At this point, that show looks like it won't happen.

The announcement, made today at the Television Critics Association upfronts, didn't come with any details about what the character might do in her live-action debut.

Confirmed: Metallo to Battle Superman on Supergirl
metallo-197361.jpg

One of the threats facing Supergirl and her cousin Superman when he drops in on her at the start of Supergirl's second season will be the famed Superman villain Metallo, EW has confirmed.

Set photos taken near the start of production had revealed a figure who appeared to be Kryptonite-powered, and nearly everyone had assumed it would turn out to be Metallo -- the cyborg with a Kryptonite heart.

His origins have been slightly different through various reboots and redesigns of the character over the years. On Supergirl, here's how he's described:

When international assassin John Corben is badly injured after taking on both Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Superman (Tyler Hoechlin), he is reborn by a shadow organization into the Kryptonite-powered supervillain Metallo.

It's likely safe to assume that the shadow organization in question is Cadmus, best known as a genetic-engineering project in the comics but apparently in the TV universe something more sinister still. Showrunners have said that the first half of the season will be largely spent dealing with Cadmus, who Season One revealed have been holding onto Supergirl's adoptive father Jeremiah Danvers (Dean Cain) for years.

Jeremiah had been previously thought to be dead, until a Cadmus agent inadvertently revealed to J'Onn J'Onzz (David Harewood) that he was still alive and in custody. For the last couple of episodes of Season Two, J'Onn and Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) were searching for more information about Cadmus and Jeremiah.

Metallo has appeared in various forms in a number of Superman media, including in live action on Superboy, Smallville, and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

Created in 1959, Metallo has become a staple of Superman's rogues gallery, as recognizable as characters like The Parasite and Mongul. He was, in fact, the foe Superman faced in the first issue of John Byrne's 1987 post-Crisis on Infinite Earths revamp.

That in the Byrne era, he was provided with Kryptonite and more or less enslaved by Lex Luthor raises some interesting questions about him joining the show at the same time as Luthor's sister Lena (Katie McGrath).

As the show heads to The CW for its second season, it's pulling out all the stops, having cast a number of new characters, many of whom are familiar to longtime DC Comics fans. Among the newcomers are Hoechlin as Superman, Lynda Carter as the as-yet-unnamed President of the United States, Chris Wood as longtime Legion of Super-Heroes member Mon-El, Sharon Leal as Miss Martian, McGrath as Lena Luthor, Ian Gomez as Snapper Carr, and Floriana Lima as Maggie Sawyer.
