Last year, with concerns raising about the hours being worked by developers, CD Projekt RED told Kotaku that the Polish studio had implemented a "non-obligatory crunch policy" so employees wouldn't have to work extra hours if they weren't comfortable doing so. Co-founder Marcin Iwiński jumped on Kotaku Splitscreen after E3 2019, making multiple public promises to minimise as much pressure on their developers as possible.

In the Splitscreen interview, Iwiński said "we can never be 200% sure that there won't be some pressure". In a conference call today with investors, CD Projekt RED confirmed that pressure has arrived.

Asked directly about whether the studio would be pulling supremely long hours - known as crunch in the games industry - Adam Kiciński, joint CEO of CD Projekt Red, confirmed they would be:

"To some degree yes, to be honest, but this is ... we're trying to limit crunch as much as possible. But you know it's the final stage. So we try to be reasonable in this regard, but yes, unfortunate."

Kiciński added that the team was also only informed of the delay "minutes" before the conference call. "We and our team – which was informed minutes ago – think that this was a good decision and that having an extra five months will enable us to deliver a perfect game," he said.

Comments from Iwiński, Kiciński and other CD Projekt RED board members during the call indicated the game was feature complete, and that the delay would be related to polish and bug fixing, rather than retooling any of the game's core systems or mechanics. The studio added that Cyberpunk 2077 would be sent out to age ratings agencies - which would include the Classification Board, although they weren't mentioned directly - in the very near future.

Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer probably won't be out until after 2021
CD Projekt confirmed that the second "triple-A" game it's working on is Cyberpunk multiplayer.

It's not one delay, but two.

CD Projekt Red announced earlier today that its anticipated RPG Cyberpunk 2077 will not make its planned April release, but will instead be out in September. In a followup Q&A session with investors, the studio said that the planned multiplayer component of the game will also be delayed, and probably won't be out until sometime after 2021.

The studio clarified during the call that the second "triple-A" project it was reported to be working on last year is the Cyberpunk multiplayer component, which is being developed in parallel with the singleplayer game. At the time, CD Projekt said that second project remained on track for release sometime in 2021, but that's very unlikely to happen now.

"Given the expected release of Cyberpunk 2077 in September, and the series of events which we expect to occur after that stage, 2021 appears unlikely as a release date for Cyberpunk multiplayer," SVP of business development Michał Nowakowski said during the call. Later on, it's repeated that multiplayer will "probably move out of 2021."

The delay also means that hands-on events planned for this year will also have to be pushed back, which isn't terribly surprising, but the studio said that it will still have a "presence" at E3 and Gamescom this year.

The good news, as far as it goes, is that CD Projekt thinks that the new Cyberpunk 2077 release date is really solid. "We pretty much know where we stand, and which aspects of the game will still require work," Nowakowski said. "We're confident the game will be released on the 17th of September."

CDPR held a conference call with a shareholder Q&A following the delay news.

Going to put the main points down below.
  • It was a unanimous decision from all board members, project managers and senior devs to delay Cyberpunk to September 17th.
  • They feel confident that it's going to be the actual release date, since they built in some buffers according to themselves and releasing a AAA game in the middle of the summer is just weird.
  • Crunch is sadly something they haven't fully eliminated, but it's less than during Witcher 3's development.
  • CDPR's mystery AAA title they have been talking about to shareholders since 2016 is Cyberpunk 2077's multiplayer. It's likely a standalone experience and singleplayer Cyberpunk will be fully released, expansions and all, before the multiplayer will be out.
  • The multiplayer will likely not be out before 2022.
  • The hands-on preview will be "soon, but not Feburary soon".
  • They will likely be at E3/Gamescom again for more promotions.
  • This one is not exactly confirmed, but one person in the conference call asked how many updates they have planned and mentioned that at least 3 tangible showcases between now and release are necessary to be deemed regular updates.

Following the announcement of the delay of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt hosted a conference call for investors to address the situation.

During the call, the developer’s management team provided interesting insight into the state of the game and the plans going forward.

First of all, we hear more about the developer’s ambitions with the game:

Cyberpunk 2077 is the biggest and most ambitious project we’ve ever undertaken. Not only we intend the game to be better than The Witcher 3 artistically, but we also want to elevate it to another level business-wise.”

The developer also mentioned that they know where they stand and which aspects of the game still require work. As a consequence, they’re confident that the game will be released on September 17 without further delays.

“We have enough time to finish the game we want it to be finished and enough buffer to make sure it’s of the quality we want it to be.”

Delaying the game “definitely” an unanimous decision. It’s something that has been discussed over time and the team is “very convinced” of it. The same goes for the new release date.

We then hear about the feedback coming from internal testing:

“The current feedback and the feedback that we’ve got so far is really optimistic and promising.”

CD Projekt is also confident that the game, “being a single-player RPG with a great story,” will find its place in the market regardless of its release date. They don’t believe that a September release window is any riskier than any other.

We also hear that the developer is still sticking to its plans regarding platforms. While they’re “thinking” about the next generation, for now, they’re focused on the current generation.

Cyberpunk is right now heading for Ps4, Xbox One, and PC. Nothing has changed in regards to the plans.”

“We’re of course looking at the next generation all the time. We’re privy to a lot of information on what’s going on with these platforms, but frankly speaking, we have nothing to share now related to that.”

Following, we get the clarification that the delay was not due to issues with fundamental mechanics.

“The game is fairly complex. There are some glitches and we’re not talking about any fundamental or important mechanics. Everything is there, but with the level of complexity and dependencies, polishing is just a complex task. It’s just the number of things we have to take care of, less than any fundamental problem. As we’ve said we’re pretty confident with the game. “

While delaying the game was a tough decision, the team believes it was a good decision. It also wasn’t due to any sudden major problem, but simply due to an ongoing process of evaluation.

There will be “some degree” of crunch within the development team, but CD Projekt is “trying to limit crunch as much as possible.” They’re trying to be “reasonable” about it, but it’s the final stage.

The developer has not yet devised a strategy for E3 and Gamescom this year. They’re going to be present in some form, but it’s too early to provide details.
At the moment they’re preparing to submit the game to rating agencies, and they’ll be sharing more of it and talking about more things between now and release. There are going to be “a few updates.” The closer we’ll get to launch, the more we’re going to see, likely with a pause during the summer.

Speaking of things like story, dialogue, and quests, the team is “very, very happy” of where they’re at, and one of the reasons behind the delay is that they don’t want to “bring those down with technical issues.”

If you want to learn more about Cyberpunk 2077, you can enjoy the most recent gameplay, read additional comments from the developers, and enjoy some really high-definition character images.

You can read our recent interview with producer Richard Borzymowski, how character creation can impact the story, and every way V can kill someone.

Infelizmente”.

So um adendo sério.

Barateando a conversão.

According to a Polish insider Borys Niespielak, the main reason for Cyberpunk 2077 delay lies in current-gen consoles, which are reportedly not powerful enough to run the game properly.

Last week, CD Projekt Red officially delayed their highly-anticipated RPG Cyberpunk 2077 to September 2020. The studio explained that the game is finished and playable but they still need more time to squash bugs and fix many glitches that are present in the current build.

This is probably one of the reasons why CD Projekt Red decided to delay the game but according to Polish insider Borys Niespielak, current generation consoles are actually the main problem for the developers.

Speaking in a podcast, which you can watch below, Niespielak says that the original Xbox One console is not powerful enough to run the game properly and apparently, Cyberpunk 2077 performance on the console is "extremely unsatisfactory".

Borys' sources confirmed that if "this problem with Xbox has not been solved by January 2020, the release date must be postponed."

Earlier this month, news surfaced of PlayStation’s Taipei Game Show lineup. The show will also feature Cyberpunk 2077. Little was known about plans for the sci-fi title at the time; however, there’s now a clearer picture for what’s on the horizon. Reportedly, CD Projekt RED will share “previously undisclosed content” from Cyberpunk 2077. Only select audiences will have a chance to see the new footage. As such, it’s unknown if the content will become public.

This news comes courtesy of VG247, a publication with plans to attend the Taipei Game Show. According to the website’s report, Cyberpunk 2077’s fresh footage will only be “premiered to a select audience.” Again, there currently exists no word on if CD Projekt RED will share the footage on public platforms. In addition, given the game’s recent delay to September 17th, all anyone can do is guess at when the studio will unveil more details.
