It’s no surprise that game reviews can be contentious issues. Few fan bases are as passionate as gamers. Anytime you introduce opinion into the mix you’re more than likely to have someone with the exact opposite view as you. Many gamers have cried foul on internet forums when they see their favourite titles receive less than stellar reviews or see games they personally don’t care for achieve scores they feel the title is undeserving of. Often the review scores will simply be written off as “Oh, that’s Gamespot. They don’t like anything on the Console X.”
SMG decided to test that idea to see if there was any credibility to it. We reviewed review sample scores from 9 well known publications to see if there was any evidence of a bias displayed.
The sites under the microscope were as follows: Edge, IGN, Gamespot, 1up, GameTrailers, Eurogamer, Gamepro, CheatCodeCentral and Gamespy.
Review scores for 15 console exclusives were compared from each site against the mean review score received (provided by Metacritic). Which sites were easy on everyone? Which sites hated everything? Which sites harboured a not so secret love for one console over the others?.....
Edge magazine, notorious for what fans considered a “lowball score” for the otherwise well reviewed PS3 title, Killzone 2, clearly favoured Xbox 360 exclusives over both the PS3 and Wii exclusives versus the average review scores. While one of the tougher reviewers in general, a clear bias towards the 360 console was visible. PS3 games and Wii games sometimes scored 20% to nearly 30% below how other reviewers saw them, while 360 games were awarded scores at or above the average. Eurogamer also seemed to show a slight favouritism towards 360 titles versus PS3 and Wii exclusives although Eurogamer averaged all 3 consoles lower than the Metacritic averages.
IGN looked to be the opposite. While IGN averaged review scores above Metacritic scores on all 3 consoles, PS3 and Wii titles generally were better received then 360 exclusives.
Surprising was how middle of the road Gamespot’s reviews were on average compared to Metacritic scores. Gamespot had gained a reputation for being harder on PS3 exclusives among the internet forums early in the PS3’s life, however this reputation certainly did not seem warranted based on the exclusives used in this article.
