Yakuza: Like A Dragon's Battle Menu Spells Out SEGA Thanks To Twitter Joke
A throwaway observation from a Twitter user inspired localizers to change the battle menu of Yakuza: Like A Dragon to spell the publisher of the game.
By Steven T. Wright on August 4, 2020 at 1:52PM PDT

Video games are made by teams of dozens, if not hundreds of people, and that means that every aspect of a given game has likely passed through many hands before it gets revealed to the public. Still, sometimes it takes an outsider to see the obvious. This was the case with the battle menu for the upcoming Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and the results are quite amusing.

Back in June, John Ricciardi--the co-founder of notable localization company 8-4--joked in a tweet that translators should change the battle menu of the eighth Yakuza game to spell SEGA. Well, as a recent behind-the-scenes video revealed, it appears that the localization team took Ricciardi's advice.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon was awesome. Excited to see it in English for the first time! BTW, not too late to change “More” to “Etc” or “Extra” to make the menu options basically spell out SEGA pic.twitter.com/kcUoim06hC
— John Ricciardi | BLACK LIVES MATTER (@johntv) June 11, 2020
Mission complete - awesome job, @RGGStudio @SEGA @TriggerRedd #SEGA #Yakuza https://t.co/8sfqK036Dm pic.twitter.com/tjJuAPq2ZS
— John Ricciardi | BLACK LIVES MATTER (@johntv) July 31, 2020
As you can see from the two above tweets, the "More" option has changed to "Etc.," which means it now spells the name of the game's publisher. It's a nice touch, and one that fits in well with the goofy, self-referential tone of the franchise.

As long-time Kiryu-heads know, Yakuza: Like A Dragon is a soft reboot of the series, and the first to feature turn-based combat. The game originally came out in Japan back in January, and the English version is schedule for a November release. It will serve as a launch title for the Xbox Series X, with a PS5 release coming sometime later.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon Pre-Orders For Steam Are Discounted
The newest Yakuza game is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X along with Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
By Jenae Sitzeson August 3, 2020 at 2:05PM PDT

Yakuza: Like a Dragon was announced during an Inside Xbox stream as one of many third-party games coming to Xbox Series X--but Sega has finally announced that the game is coming to PlayStation 5 as well. In addition, you'll be able to play the new Yakuza adventure on Xbox One, PS4, and PC. A release window for the game has been confirmed: Yakuza: Like a Dragon will release on current-generation consoles and PC this November, and it'll be a day one release for Xbox Series X whenever that console launches. The PlayStation 5 version will release at a later date. Yakuza: Like a Dragon is up for pre-order now (with multiple editions available) if you want to secure your copy early, including via Fanatical.

Like a Dragon supports Xbox Smart Delivery, which means buying the game on Xbox One will get you the Series X version automatically. The game also has cross-save support, so if you start playing on Xbox One, your progress will transfer over to Series X. Sega announced a PS5 upgrade path is also planned for the Western release and will be announced at a later date, so if you pre-order on PS4, you can count on having a PS5 copy as well.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the eighth mainline title in the Yakuza series and the first one that won't follow Kazuma Kiryu as the protagonist. Instead, you'll play as Ichiban Kasuga, a low-ranking yakuza grunt who goes to prison for a crime he didn't commit to make himself a hero in his clan--only to be released 18 years later and find that no one is waiting for him. Kasuga realizes he's been betrayed by the man he trusted the most and sets off on a journey to discover the truth behind the behind his family's betrayal and take his life back.

Sega announced Yakuza: Like a Dragon will feature English voice-overs for its worldwide release, with an English voice cast that includes actor George Takei as Masumi Arakawa, patriarch of the Arakawa Family.

Unlike previous games in the Yakuza series, which feature beat 'em up battle mechanics, Like a Dragon introduces turn-based RPG-style combat with a four-person team. However, you'll still take on side quests and enjoy side activities like "Dragon Kart," a Mario Kart-style racing game. Check out our full Yakuza: Like a Dragon preview for more information on what to expect from the game.

Save on the Yakuza games from Fanatical
Sounds like a dragon of a deal
Deals by Alan Wen, Contributor Updated on 3 August 2020

If you haven't yet set foot on the streets of Kamurocho, then now's the time as you can save a lot on the Yakuza games on PC.

I for one am gutted that I had to cancel my trip to Japan this year, while the Tokyo Olympics also got postponed. But if you ever wanted a virtual tour through one of the most special (and seedy) parts of Tokyo, then the Yakuza games are a great place to start. Over on Fanatical, you can pick up the Yakuza bundle, which includes Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2, for just £20.99.

If you're not sure about going for them all at once, you can also buy them separately, and Yakuza 0 is an absolute steal for just £3.44. It's also arguably the best of the bunch - after all, there's a disco-dancing mini game and you can recruit a chicken to help you build your real estate empire.

The deals also apply to the newest instalment Yakuza: Like A Dragon, releasing on 13th November, which introduces brand new protagonist Ichiban Kasuga to the series, as well a new location in Yokohama, and a drastic change from real-time brawling to a turn-based JRPG party battle system. A 17% discount applies to the following editions:
The Day Ichi Edition will already net you the Legends Costume Set, letting you dress your characters up as fan favourites like Kazuma Kiryu and Daigo Dojima, but the Hero Edition will include a selection of the game's DLC such as additional jobs while the Legendary Hero Edition unlocks all DLC, as well as other in-game bonus content like a stat boost set.

If you're after something else besides Yakuza, Sega actually have a whole host of other games on sale at Fanatical as well, so here's some other great savings that caught our eye:
The sale for all the above ends on 16th August.

Someone Made a Nearly Perfect, Live-Action Recreation of Yakuza
This guy might not be Kazuma Kiryu, but he sure does walk, talk, and hide like the legendary Dragon of Dojima from the Yakuza series.

While our long wait for the Western release of Yakuza: Like a Dragon continues, fans of the series continue to provide exceptional content to tide us over. Today, two fans who go by KaroruGans0 and hayaken_kmzw on Twitter posted a live-action recreation of the Kamurocho streets. It’s not completely flawless and also takes some inspiration from the Grand Theft Auto series. That said, it’s pretty awesome how well they’ve done with this. Check it out below.

From the start, you can tell these people have played some Yakuza. The lead actor perfectly mimicks Kiryu’s walking and idle animations. The swagger in that walk is spot on. Even his weird running style features, which only looks odder in real life. As the short continues, it just gets better.

I mean, the part where he follows that guy through the streets is incredible. The lead runs into walls, hides behind things that would never cover his body, and even takes some inspiration from a certain superspy. This team completely gets what makes Yakuza games great and has put all that knowledge into an excellent video. I’ll stop pointing out references, so you can have some fun looking for them yourself.

As good as this is, it only makes me want that Yakuza: Like a Dragon release date more. There are, of course, rumors that the date is November 13, but until those are confirmed by SEGA, I’ll continue waiting. If you haven’t checked out a Yakuza game yet and are interested in hopping into the long-running series, we have some suggestions. I would highly encourage you to give the series a look.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Yakuza: Like a Dragon will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store on November 13 in the west, publisher Sega and developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio announced.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon will also be available for Xbox Series X on day one of the console’s release in November, as well as for PlayStation 5 at a later date.

Sega also released a new trailer dubbed “How Will You Rise?,” which shows protagonist Ichiban Kasuga alongside party members Nanba, Saeko, and Adachi, as they swap between some of the more than 20 unique Jobs (classes) available throughout the game. Ichiban envisions himself as the lead character in an RPG and his battles take on the form of turn-based RPG battles.

Here is an overview of the game, via its Steam page:
Rise Like a Dragon
Ichiban Kasuga, a low-ranking grunt of a low-ranking yakuza family in Tokyo, faces an 18-year prison sentence after taking the fall for a crime he didn’t commit. Never losing faith, he loyally serves his time and returns to society to discover that no one was waiting for him on the outside, and his clan has been destroyed by the man he respected most.
Ichiban sets out to discover the truth behind his family’s betrayal and take his life back, drawing a ragtag group of society’s outcasts to his side: Adachi, a rogue cop, Nanba, a homeless ex-nurse, and Saeko, a hostess on a mission. Together, they are drawn into a conflict brewing beneath the surface in Yokohama and must rise to become the heroes they never expected to be.
Level Up from Underdog to Dragon in Dynamic RPG Combat
Experience dynamic RPG combat like none other. Switch between 19 unique Jobs ranging from Bodyguard to Musician, using the battlefield as your weapon. Take up bats, umbrellas, bikes, signs, and everything else at your disposal to clean up the streets!
Enter the Underworld Playground
When you’re not busy bashing heads, relax by hitting up the local arcade for some classic Sega games, compete with locals in a no holds barred go-kart race around Yokohama, complete 50 unique substories, or just take in the scenery of a modern-day Japanese city. There’s always something new around the corner.

Microsoft Funding Marketing And Other Parts of Yakuza: Like a Dragon’s Western Release
By admin September 30, 2020

It seems that Microsoft and Sega are getting more comfortable in their Yakuza relationship then we first thought. The next generation version of Yakuza: Like a Dragon being an Xbox exclusive raised some eyebrows when it was announced. The series has always debuted on PlayStation platforms leaving longtime fans wondering why there was a sudden shift towards Xbox.
During the Kinda Funny Games Daily show Imran Khan (Games journalist) answered a question from a fan who wondered if Microsoft had paid for exclusivity and he said:
Yes! Microsoft took a really hard introspective look at themselves in quarter one of 2017. Where there were a bunch of big games that came from Japan and they had none of them. Not just in Japan, just in general there was a bunch of big games and they didn’t have any of those big releases. Obviously they weren’t going to get Zelda but they could get Yakuza. So that became a big thing of courting Sega and talking to them and saying “Hey, why don’t you put this thing here?” It could do better and Yakuza 0 did pretty well on Game Pass.

A thread was then created on ResetEra about these comments. Imran Khan decided to clarify his comments as some people thought he meant a cash deal between Microsoft and Sega had been agreed. In a post he stated:
To be clear, Microsoft didn’t cut a check and say “This is to make the PS5 version late.”
They paid for things like marketing and shouldered some other costs and Sega prioritized the Xbox versions because of that. Sony has done that too. As has Nintendo.
After years of being a small cult series with questions on if it was profitable in the West it’s nice to see the console makers rolling out the red carpet for the series.
