Yakuza: Like a Dragon is due out for PlayStation 4 on January 16, 2020 in Japan, and in 2020 in the Americas and Europe. Read more about the game here and here.■ Ichiban Kasuga in Battle
Born in the soapland Shangri-La in Kamurocho, Ichiban Kasuga lived an isolated childhood, never knowing his parents. For Kasuga growing up, his only pleasure in life was playing Dragon Quest, which someone had brought to the office several years earlier.
Captivated by the Dragon Quest that kept him company and gave him his first taste of adventure, it became Kasuga’s dream to one day become a hero who fights alongside his friends for justice.
Ever since, Kasuga remembers Dragon Quest whenever he does anything. That habit remains in tact even now—in battles where his life is on the line, he still likens his opponent to a monster.
In Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Kasuga’s perspective is represented in unique ways such as the enemy’s appearance changing during battle, similar to a monster. In this way, you can battle against a variety of unique enemies within the series’ existing real world setting.
■ New Battle System: Live Command RPG Battle
“Live Command RPG Battle” is a new battle system that combines the series’ signature action with an RPG battle system that all players can enjoy. While it is an RPG battle system, time does not come to a halt for the city that is always in motion, and battles unfold dynamically and in real-time. At the same time, the situation in the city and the enemy’s positioning has a major effect on battle, meaning strategy has also significantly improved.
Master Commands in Which Various Action Unfolds
In addition to basic actions such as “Attack,” “Defend,” and “Run Away,” original elements such as “Kiwami Skills” and “Delivery Help” can also be selected during battle. The Kiwami Skills command allows players to execute special moves, including powerful techniques similar to the series’ longstanding “Heat Actions,” and can also activate techniques with various effects including “Attack,” “Recovery,” and “Support.” Many Kiwami Skills require button mashing or button inputs, so you can enjoy the feeling of playing an action game even though it is an RPG.
Attack Any Enemy, But with Potential Hindrances
When attacking distant enemies, the enemy in front of you may block your attack. Or in a situation where an ally is nearby, they may unleash a followup attack on the enemy you attack. The positional relationship between enemies and allies, which change in real-time, will significantly affect your strategy in battle.
From ranged attacks to cooperative attacks and more, a large number of attacks will be available, and depending on your position against the enemy and the layout of the battle stage, your level of effectiveness will constantly change. Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a game with a deep layer of strategy that does not end at simply “choosing a skill.”
Use Objects in the City as Weapons
As you might expect from a game in the Yakuza series, you will still be able to pick up and use objects in the city as weapons. If an item such as a sign or bicycle happens to appear within range, the action of picking it up to wield it, or kicking it at the enemy to attack them is automatically activated. Since the power of those attacks are massive, how you use the items you come across will influence how battles play out.
■ An Overview of Each Character’s Battle Style
In Yakuza: Like a Dragon, characters have jobs, and by changing jobs you can change their battle style. Here we will introduce the battle styles of the protagonist Kasuga, as well as his allies Adachi, Namba, and Saeko.
Kasuga: “Hero” – An All-Rounder Who Defeats Enemies with Swords (Bats, etc.) and Also Has Support Skills
Kasuga wields a bat in battle. From his standard “Bunt Attack” to his wide-range “Mega Swing,” he can learn a variety of flexible Kiwami Skills to use accordingly in battle. He has Kiwami Skills to give orders to other party members, which increases their attack power or heals them, making his battle style one suited to the name “Hero.”
Adachi: “Detective” – A Strong “Warrior” with a Battle Style that Combines a Baton and Apprehension Techniques, and Has Skills Only a Veteran Detective Would Have
Adachi fights with a powerful battle style, where he wields a baton in his left hand to beat down enemies, while using his right hand to grab-hook enemies. As a former detective, he makes use of various apprehension techniques. Striking a powerful blow from his baton, he can also withstand multiple enemy attacks or immobilize the enemy.
Namba: “Homeless” – A Natural “Mage” With Skills Acquired by Survival, Who Attacks Enemies by Manipulating Pigeons, Blowing a Scorching Mist, and Even Stinky Breath
Namba wields weapons like umbrellas and canes in battle. While his normal attacks are not strong at all, he can overwhelm enemies by commanding pigeons to attack them, and use alcohol and a lighter to spray a scorching mist, somewhat like magic. He also has various skills seeming of a homeless person, such as “Begging” to persuade enemies to give him items.
Saeko: “Junior Mama” – A Tricky “Magic Warrior” Who Mows Down Enemies with her Handbag, and Utilizes Techniques that Lower Enemy Ability and Inflict Status Ailments
Saeko fights wielding a handbag and props only a cabaret club junior mama would have. She has a variety of Kiwami Skills, including swinging her handbag like a hammer, blinding the enemy with makeup powder, and self-strengthening through yoga.
■ Delivery Help
One of the key features of battles in Yakuza: Like a Dragon is “Delivery Help,” which is a “summoning service” that dispatches a character to help you fight, accessed by paying a fee via your smartphone during battle. The content of the summoning service differs depending on the character, ranging from “all range attacks with added effects” to “HP recovery” and so on.
Since it costs a lot more to summon characters that offer stronger services, it is important to save up your money. You will be able to summon more and more characters as you clear the sub-stories that occur in the city and as you progress through the main story.

The following is an introduction to the jobs that protagonist Ichiban Kasuga and his allies can change to at Hello Work.
Dancer
A high-spirited job that unleashes rhythmic and cool attacks while dancing. The Dancer’s break dance-based spin attacks deal damage to surrounding enemies, meaning group battles are of no issue. Other than that, the Dancer possesses many tricky techniques, and it is said to showcase its skill through the skillful combination of these techniques.
Fortuneteller
A job that fights with a crystal ball in hand. While the Fortuneteller does not appear suited for battle at first glance, it is very frightful job that can create various disastrous and miraculous effects such as thunder through its “fortunetelling,” as well as deal heavy damage and status ailments to enemies. The fortuneteller is a job that possesses a certain wickedness like a wizard, unlike Nanba’s original job, the Homeless job. Since its defense power is low, it is important to use techniques without getting close to the enemy.
Riot Police Officer
A job with a full-body armor and a large shield. As its appearance suggests, it boasts high defense power and toughness. With attack and defense techniques that make use of its shield, the Riot Police Officer would play the role of the “Heavy Warrior” or “Knight” in an RPG. Since this is a job that specializes in defense and is difficult to defeat in battle, it is recommended that characters with low physical and defense power be brought up as a Riot Police Officer.
Idol
A job that is exclusive to female characters, the Idol charms its enemies and heals its allies, and would play the role of a “Priestess” in an RPG. Its abilities are extremely balanced, and uses a microphone to fight with direct attacks, as well as many song-based attack and recovery techniques. The Idol is an all-purpose, easy to use job that can play the role of both an attacker and a healer.
■ Changing Jobs at Hello Work
In Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Ichiban Kasuga and his allies can change to various jobs at Hello Work. Since each job offers vastly different battle styles, techniques, and ability values, determining which job to choose and whether to develop that job is a key strategy. Try out a combination of various jobs while building your dream party.
—Hello Work Misaki at Isezaki Ijincho in Yokohama.
Job Development
Each job has a “Job Rank,” which similar to character level increases as you gain experience through battle and the like. As your Job Rank rises, you can learn new techniques unique to that job, as well as increase your character’s base ability values. Some of the techniques you can learn are special skills that can be used by all jobs. Also, since your base ability values increased by your Job Rank carry over when switching to other jobs, experiencing and mastering various jobs is a shortcut to character enhancement.
It should be noted that Yakuza: Like a Dragon has parameters called “Life Experience” (charm, enthusiasm, mentality, kindness, cheerfulness, etc.), and if you do not meet the required Life Experience for each job, you will not be able to switch to that job. Life Experience rises as you complete quests and enjoy Play Spots.Fortuneteller
Unleashes various techniques that come with mysterious effects via the crystal ball they hold in their hand. Force enemies into a swirl of agony with fire and electricity. Their defense is low, however. In a fantasy RPG, they would be the “mage” class.
Riot Police Officer
A job with high defense power thanks to its big shield and full-body protector. In a fantasy RPG, they would be the “knight” class.
Idol
A female-exclusive job that specializes in enchanting enemies and healing allies. With mic in hand, it uses physical attacks and song-based techniques, and has fairly decent attack and defense power. In a fantasy RPG, they would be the “dancer” class.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is due out for PlayStation 4 on January 16, 2020 in Japan, and in 2020 in the Americas and Europe. Read more about the game here, here, here, and here.■ Life Experience
“Life Experience” consists of six parameters that represent protagonist Ichiban Kasuga’s characteristics and human nature. Those parameters are “Enthusiasm,” “Mentality,” “Cheerfulness,” “Kindness,” “Intelligence,” and “Stylishness.”
There are various merits to building up Life Experience, such as getting a specific job through Hello Work, talking to people you would normally not bother to talk to, gaining the upper hand in battle, and becoming more popular with women. Build up all sorts of experience to strengthen Kasuga’s Life Experience.
Your Life Experience parameters will develop based on your actions and choices. Here is an outline of each parameter in greater detail:
■ How to Increase Life Experience
- Enthusiasm – The source of “willingness” and “romance.” Develops through enthusiastic conduct and doing things with utmost effort.
- Mentality – The source of “mental strength” and “concentration.” Develops through situations that test your courage and emotional strength.
- Cheerfulness – The source of “sociability” and “brightness.” Develops through actions that lighten the mood.
- Kindness – The source of “broad-mindedness” and “empathy.” Develops through kind interaction with people, animals, and nature.
- Intelligence – The source of “education” and “memory.” Develops through logical suggestion and studying.
- Stylishness – The source of “charm” and “character.” Develops through clever exchange and dignified behavior.
Life Experience accumulates through various actions, including helping those in need and enjoying Play Spots. Life Experience also accumulates through choices made in events for sub-stories and the like. Assertively playing, learning, and interacting with the people you encounter is the shortcut to building up Life Experience.
■ An Example of How to Increase Life Experience
Ocean Qualification School: A Play Spot that Significantly Increases Kasuga’s Life Experience
“Ocean Qualification School” is a new Play Spot that you will be able to visit as you progress through the story, and by passing the various qualifying exams you can take there, Kasuga’s Life Experience will rapidly increase.
At the Qualification School, you can take exams with questions in a variety of genres, from “History,” where you can get a general education on Japanese and world history, to “Isezaki Ijincho Certification,” which is filled with questions for Isezaki Ijincho enthusiasts.
Exams are four-choice quizzes where you must answer the questions within the allotted time. Pass various tests to improve Kasuga’s human nature.
Every Play Spot Increases Kasuga’s Life Experience
In addition to building up Kasuga’s Life Experience through the aforementioned sub-stories and Qualification School, Life Experience can also be accumulated through various Play Spots including Golf, PachiSlot, Dragon Kart, and more. Enjoy the city’s various Play Spots and increase your Life Experience to enjoy the game with an upper hand.

“Bonds” are a new element that reveal the relationship between protagonist Ichiban Kasuga and his friends. By fighting alongside, eating with, and enjoying Play Spots with your friends, your bonds will deepen.
By deepening your bonds, your friends’ abilities will greatly increase, allowing them to change jobs, learn new skills, initiate follow-ups on Kasuga’s attacks, and so on. All of this will benefit you in battle.
—From the bond status screen, you can check your bonds with each character.
■ How to Deepen Your Bonds
Spend Time Together at Play Spots
Some of the game’s Play Spots allow you to bring a friend along to deepen your bonds. For example, you can watch a movie with a friend at the new “Traditional Movie Theater” Play Spot, and if you choose their preferred movie, you can deepen your bonds in a sitting.
Eat Together
When eating out at a restaurant in Yokohama, you can trigger a special meal conversation event with your friend called “Table Talk” by choosing the right order from the menu. Through Table Talk, you can further deepen your bonds.
■ Bond Dramas: Side Stories that Occur by Deepening Bonds
As you deepen your bonds with each of your friends, side stories called “Bond Dramas” that reveal each person’s true nature will unfold one by one. By deepening your bonds, your friends will place their trust in you and open up to Kasuga in a variety of ways, including by revealing their secret pasts, worries, and troubles. By hearing out their stories and resolving their worries, your can develop their abilities in a major way.
Bond Skills: Strong Cooperative Skills Learned by Deepening Your Bonds
By clearing Bond Dramas and deepening your bonds with friends, you can learn powerful cooperative attack skills called “Bond Skills.” A Bond Skill’s contents and effects differ for each character, but each one is a feat of its own and boasts the highest-class power in the game. Through the proper use of Bond Skills, you can crush the formidable foes and powerful bosses that stand in your way.
—In this Bond Skill, Adachi binds the enemy’s arms, then Kasuga follows up with a strong bat attack. It is a powerful, unavoidable blow.

The right arm of Geomijul leader Seong-Hui. Together they sustain the organization. While can be rational and calm, he also has a ruthless side as a hitman who will calmly eliminate anyone in his way.

Mamoru Takabe (voiced by Taichi Endou)
The sharp number two of the Yokohama Seiryu Clan. He has sworn his allegiance to Ryuhei Hoshino, who has placed great trust in him as his right arm. While he has a calm and collected personality, his hot-bloodedness allows absolutely no tolerance for his enemies.

—The Otohime Land brothel. There is currently only one manager, who is always swamped with work. Kasuga and company come upon this shop via a job offer from Hello Work and go in for an interview…

—There are a number of tenement houses in the Snack District. It is a place for the adults living in Isezaki Ijincho to relax.
