BudgetGaming (3.5/5)Rise of the Rōnin feels both fresh and familiar. For newcomers, this is very pleasant, but for returning Team Ninja or Soulslike players, the game quickly becomes monotonous in terms of challenge. The activities and side missions in the open world provide a reasonable amount of variety between the main missions, but never take the game to the next level. In terms of performance, Rise of the Rōnin is also not entirely flawless at the time of writing, which certainly doesn't throw a spanner in the works, but is a blemish on this otherwise fairly cool game. For anyone who likes action RPGs, Rise of the Rōnin certainly offers something cool, but even the best samurai stumbles over his katana from time to time.

Fextralife (8.4/10)While Rise of the Ronin suffers from outdated and unattractive graphics, the story and gameplay more than make up for it with a wealth of varied and interesting content available paired with good storytelling that keeps players engaged and wanting to know more. Fans of Team Ninja may be disappointed from the step down in combat quality, but nonetheless it is an enjoyable title that we can recommend at full price.
IGN (7/10)Rise of the Ronin marries a cool historical setting, Team Ninja's mastery of tough-but-fair combat, and some smart RPG design to make a game that is immediately compelling, and even more fun with friends. It's full of cool little touches, whether it's throwing something at an enemy with the grappling rope or dropping from your glider onto your horse. Unfortunately, it's also a game full of map clutter, bloated systems, and a truly absurd amount of junk loot, and the time I spent clearing out everything that didn't spark joy and dealing with all these non-essential systems made me pine for a leaner, meaner, more focused game. Rise of the Ronin is excellent when it has the courage to be itself and lean into its challenging, rewarding fighting; too often, however, it feels stuck in indecision, torn between what it wants to be and what it feels it's expected to be, and not even the best samurai can overcome that.

PlayStation Universe (9.5/10)A jack of all trades and master of some, though Rise of the Ronin feels like a melting pot of influences from other games, it is also quite the surprise of the year for me thus far as it clearly shows that Team Ninja has a confident grasp of compelling open world design in a way that many of its genre stablemates do not. Though the visual presentation might be comparatively a little rough around the edges, Rise of the Ronin nonetheless is simultaneously the most accessible and ambitious game Team Ninja has done to date and one that both hardcore action RPG fiends and open world adventure aficionados will surely embrace.

PushSquare (6/10)Rise of the Ronin isn't a bad game; it's something debatably worse: completely forgettable. With dated open world design and a monotonous narrative, the cracking combat of a Team Ninja title is left to try and pick up the pieces. It manages to get the title in acceptable shape, and with its Bonds system and culture clash, just about forms an experience one could enjoy. Where it falls apart is the fact the open world is so intrinsically linked to all these features and mechanics that it's impossible to find pleasure in them for any respectable length of time. Rise of the Ronin is designed to attract a wider audience than Team Ninja titles past; what they find might put them off for good.

RPGSite (8/10)Rise of the Ronin is a solid action RPG that provides a thorough look into the Bakumatsu era of Japan. I enjoy stories about that historical period, so I think a lot of my enjoyment of this game's narrative stems from that foundation. It is relatively much more grounded than Team Ninja's previous action RPGs as it contains no mythical, supernatural, or fantastical elements; Rise of the Ronin is a story about humans all the way through. While this title retains the awesome action combat that Team Ninja is known for, its open-world activities lack variety, and much of what it has to offer in that regard has been done before, and even better, in other open-world titles.

VGC (3/5)Nothing in Rise of the Ronin is bad. It's a completely passable game that feels like it would have been much more warmly received by us had the last 8 years of open-world games not happened. In 2024 it feels profoundly dated, and while there is fun to be had in a solid combat system, there's not much in Rise of the Ronin that you haven't seen before.
The only exception being the game's setting and story, which we enjoyed throughout our playthrough, even if the things we were doing in aid of that story weren't stellar.
